Wiper motor and switch
« on: April 27, 2010 - 10:13:00 AM »
Hey all
Need some help and advice that is probably best from you blokes as the wiper motors and switches in our Aussie Valiants are nothing like the US ones.
Firstly what I know.
I'm pretty sure my 70 challenger (10/69 build)originally had a standard dash. The dash frame and wiring support this assumption.
Someone has fitted a rallye cluster to it.
Now from what I can work out you could get 2speed,3 speed or variable speed wipers. Is this correct?
The wipers in the car aren't working but I tracked the problem to the switch.
When they worked, though, they only had one speed.
The dead switch appears to be a variable speed switch.
I plugged the switch out of a 72 Dart Swinger I have and they worked but still only one speed.
The Dart Swinger switch appears to be a 3 speed.
I then tried a switch from a wrecker 67 Dodge Phoenix (What you'd call a 67 Plymouth Fury)which was a variable switch and it worked but still only single speed.
After that I'm a bit stumped as to what to check next.
Is there any way I can tell if my wiper motor is 2sp,3sp or variable?
Would the wiring in the car be incompatible to the wiper motor fitted?
Do you absolutely need the right switch with the right wiper motor and right wiring?
I'm in the dark.
Any help and advice appreciated.
Below is a pic of the wiper motor if that's of any help.
Regards   Ken

Hi Ken,

I sounds to me that you have a variable speed wiper switch and it may be broken. Meaning that the resistor coil is open and is why you would only get one speed. If you could confirm the switch part number as being either a 2770380, 2947404, 3488764 or 3488773 would be a big help and we can go from there.

Hey,thanks for the quick reply Slotts
You're lucky I'm still up.
Or I'm lucky.
It's 1.30am over here!!! :smilielol:

The non working variable switch from the challenger is p.n.2770380

Are the wiper motors different or just run at speeds dependant upon the supplied voltage from the switch?

2-speed wiper motors are different than the variable speed/3-speed that you have.

Obviously the 2sp motor looks different if you can tell mine's a 3sp/variable just by looking at my pic?

Your ok with that motor. The variable switch and the three speed switch controlled the same motor. The three speed just had fixed resistance points rather than a sweep across a coil.

I can help you with that switch if you like. If you could send me an email at jsrestorations@rocketmail.com would be good and I can send you some pictures.
