oil recommendation needed for my 426
« on: April 27, 2010 - 09:32:35 PM »
Just did my first oil change on my new 426 crate...Noticed a small intermittent nocking when the car warmed up.   i used 10w30 and was told this may be the problem, that heavier oil may be required.   There were no problems prior to oil change.   i'm hoping this is it and not something more serious.   i've not driven the car, just started it up.

Any recommendations or thoughts??

10-30 has the viscosity of piss when it gets hot. Drain it when the motors hot if you don't think so. It'll slosh around in the pan and uncover the oil pickup on hard braking and acceleration. I've always run straight 30wt or 20-40 or 20-50 Valvoline racing oil in old musclecar motors and they always look great when dissasembled. Opinions vary on this topic I'm sure, but what you use in your 2009 4 cyl car is not what's best for a Hemi. :2cents:

Thanks, i will.   some of my buddies have brought to my attention what the worst case might be and I hate the thought of pulling my engine just  having finished it last fall.

I'll post my results.

I've always run Castrol 20w50 in my big block Roadrunner with no problems.  I hope thats whats causing your tapping sound.  GOOD LUCK!

this is a big can of worms but the bottom line is this ..... they have removed all of the high pressure /anti scuff/ Zinc from the new oils including diesel oils & Rotella , there is simply nothing left on the shelf with adequate additives to keep the older engines alive .
The best solution seems to be the Z-Alt which SG rated  or Brad Penn oils , the next best   is adding additives to the oil like the Comp Cams additive , after that the Mopar VU 1197 or GM EOS is somewhat helpful in restoring the needed additives but I have heard it is not available in the US anymore but it is here for now .
the next place to look is agrcultural oils ,in Canaduh at least it is still SL rated not SM for now

BG's MOA and RF-7 additives have always had ZDDP in them, and still do. Just one more option for keeping the high-pressure additives in the oil.
