No compression in # 2
« on: April 28, 2010 - 04:15:15 PM »
I am trying to get the Polara out of the carport, had spark issues, got those sorted out, decided to give it a comp. test and found #2 is dead (10 pounds). Hoping the squirt of oil in the cylinder wouldn't help the compression and it didn't so hopefully it is just carboned up/ stuck valves. Pulled the valve cover and inspected the valvetrain in motion, all appear to be opening and closing normally.
Keep in mind this 318 is the rattiest I have ever seen plus I have done absolutely nothing to it since buying it six or seven years ago. I am just trying to get it rolling for the summer but with the compression thing, it doan look like that's gonna happen. Need's a new fuel pump too... and brakes and a tranny service and so on and so forth :money:

Oh well, looks like I'll get the Scout running and drive that since it too, is a convertible :2thumbs:

the valve could be bent or split or stuck , you could do up some rebuilt 302 or 308 casting heads & just swap the heads

I'm hoping to get it fired up and running and mayhap just romp on it for a few to try and clear it's throat??
I seem to recall that it worked last time, funny thing is, is that you would think that if the cylinder had been dead forever, the plug would be way more fouled than the others which is not the case and not to mention I drove the thing for two summers right after buying it including the trip home from Kettle Falls WA, to Seattle and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

I may just try to find a running 318 from C.L or even pull a part, swap and just rebuild the original 318 since I am sure it's on it's original build and well worth it, the thing when running had great pull and power for a huge land yacht

maybe a pistonring froze up...  put some pressure on that cylinder, then at least you know where the air flows to.

 :iagree:

If it was sitting all winter it could just be that the ring isn't expanding to seal at the top of the bore. If that's the case, you can try pouring some Marvel Mystery Oil into that cylinder and letting it sit for awhile (day or two). I recently did this with a complete 360 I got for cheap that had been sitting, initially a leak down test showed almost no seal at all (63% loss) in 5 of the 8 cylinders. After a couple day soak and rotating it through by hand a few times here and there I managed to unstick 3 of the 5, put them all up at 20% loss (on a cold engine!). Still trying on the last two! Just remember not to crank it through if it has a cylinder full of oil, you'll hydro-lock the sucker. Leave the plug out and rotate it back and forth by hand to exercise the ring with some oil sitting on the piston.

While I am still not sure about #2, I have gotten the thing running pretty good, When installing the plugs, #2 tightened to what I thought was finger tight and proceeded to use the ratchet. Upon using the ratchet the plug loosened and I was able to turn it another three turns to seat. Now when I was putting the compression tester on there it would do the same as the spark plug but it is a fitting that spins, I think I am not able to fully seat the tester and therefore the reading would not be accurate????

Also while removing the wires one by one starting with # 2, there were no noticable differences in how it was running, I removed 2, 4, 6 and 8 and figured that was enough for testing purposes. I'm gonna throw in some tranny fluid and see if it will move and how it runs under load.

Any thoughts???

Took the thing up and down the road and it seems to run ok, a little hesitation due mainly to bad gas
Thanks for the help guys, here are a few pics of the car if anyone is interested :2thumbs:

Like the back end.

Why is it I feel most bumper guards are ugly now. I replaced my 78 Magnum front bumper with a almost NOS one and left the bumper guards off. Heck today nobody bumps bumpers, lol

I bought both sets off e-bay years ago. Both sets were NOS and since the car didn't have any, I figured what the heck. I think they were only like 15.00 or so for each set, I was looking for a set for the Challenger when I found those :2thumbs:

Yeah, bumper guards seem to show up on ebay and its temping to get them.

Everybody thought I was messing up by not using them and maybe some jerk will bump it one day and I regret not using them but so far I think it looks cleaner / plus I don't bump my legs walking in front of it parked in the garage
