What seat is this???
« on: April 29, 2010 - 11:24:31 PM »
Hello all,

I have a 72 Challenger and I recently bought new 72' seat covers from Year One. The back seat went on fine, but when I started to recover one of the front seats I realized that the new covers are different from the old covers. After doing some research, I'm sure the new covers are correct for 72', but I can't identify what seats I have.

The seat back bun doesn't match up to the new cover very well. :( I may have to add alot of foam to get this to work.

Anyhow, I'm very curious - what kind of seat is this?

Thanks!

What is the build date of your Challenger?  Looking at your seat and the one from the Hamtramck Registry site, it's possible they are early production '72 seat covers with a running change to the style Year One sells.  They could even be '71 seat covers since a lot of the new model year (i.e. '72) publications had to be produced well ahead of time, and so the proper '72 covers might not have been available at the time of printing, but the publications would lead people to think these are the '72 covers.  This continues even to the present day: my '07 Dodge Grand Caravan's seat covers have a different pattern from the ones shown in the 2007 Caravan sales brochure (printed in August 2006), and my Caravan was builit in April 2007.

Another possiblility is the factory was trying to get rid of the previous model year's supply of parts if your '72 was an early production model (e.g. August 1971).  FWIW, my '72 Challenger was built in July '72 and it has the seat covers Year One (and Legendary Interiors) sells.

Yep, that's what the new seat covers look like!

So what the heck do I have?

Looks like 73-74 A-body to me. Also looks to have been recovered with non-factory stuff.

If your seats have plastic backs, they are more likely 70-72 era.

I would just buy new buns. You would be amazed at the difference between new foam and the 30+ year old stuff!

They do have the plastic backs. Here's a pic of the seat back foam and brace

I was thinking A-body too, not so sure at the moment.

They don't make buns for 72-74 that I'm aware of. Has that changed?
