Fuel tank filler tube paint
« on: May 02, 2010 - 06:09:36 AM »
I read on another thread it supposed to be natural steel.  however I stripped off the black trunk paint someone put there and it appears to be brush painted silver.  What is correct?

My '73 was galvanized, not the shiny slick more of a dull gray that rubbed off easily.

Maybe mine is galvanized.  It looks painted an and paint stripped did not touch it.  I scratched it up changing out the tank seal and want to fix it up.

Hmm I wonder if it is dipped in lead.  Thats what it looks like and stripper does not touch it.

My 71 I just took off has nothing on it aside from some red overspray.
Looks like untreated metal.

They were origonally lead dipped.  That process has been outlawed by the EPA.  If your tube is free from dents and deep scratches, you can use some fine steel wull on it.  That will bring back a lot of its natural color.

Lead dipped it is then.  It has some scratches.  When I detail out my trunk I'll put a torch to it and see what happens.  <After the gas fumes are out>

You'll melt the solder holding the inner thing that's at the tank end. (at least  on my '73).
Don't ask me how I know.  :-\   .....I'm thinking weld through primer might do the trick.  :dunno: Everything I've tested so far is melted by gasoline.

Used steel wool on mine and it looks very nice, not going to mess with it any further.

Good point bullitt.  I scratched it up a bit getting it in without dropping the tank.  i know sort of half a$$ED..  I'll try some steel wool if/when I pull it out next time.  The trunk is coated with undercoating on the inside, probably because the rear window leaked, and instead of fixing the source, they fixed the symptom.  Typical of the work done on the car.  One of these days I'll redo the trunk most likely when I paint the whole car.

I painted mine light machine grey.   It looked like Chrysler was lazy when they didn't paint it.
