Front of transmission leaking
« on: May 02, 2010 - 05:54:26 PM »
On the way home from a short drive yesterday I noticed all kinds of smoke in the rear view mirror.  Got the car home and parked in the garage.  Jacked her up and found this

The fluid is comming out of the front inspection cover.  It is not the pan gasket.  Have to drop the trans one night this week.  What will I most likely need to replace so I can pick up parts ahead of time.  The trans was rebuilt 2 years ago.  Still shifts as hard as day one.

I had a similar problem once. The torque converter seal on the front went to heaven. The fluid traveled down my exhaust pipes burning white smoke, and putting tranny fliud up on my rear bumper.    :pullinghair:

Did you pull the inspection cover?  Maybe if you get real lucky it's the converter drain plug.

I had the same thing happen to me and I lost a lot of fluid.  I filled it up hoping to get home and now about
4000 km later it never leaked again.  I was told that dirt may have got into a seal?

Looks like the front seal but check the front pump bolts first. If the front pump bush has excessive clearance the seal doesn't have much of a chance.

For it to be leaking that bad when it was fine,I think you must have spun the pump bushing out in the pump body behind the front seal.

Thanks for the info.  I'll take a good look once I get it out of the car.  It did start all of a sudden.  Bone dry for 2 years since the rebuild and then bam a bad leak during a mild 15 minute cruise.

Just a comment, as I have a bone stock auto I always start in neutral so that trans is circulating oil straightaway, if I was to leave the auto in when I up grade I would fit the different spool so that trans has pressure in park.   :2cents:

Finally got it out and found my problem.

Man that sucker is long and heavy with the Gear Vendors on there.

This is the convertor with water on the top, input sealed off and getting ready for a pressure test after being removed from the sink.  Crappy cell phone pic.

test started...notice the air bubbles.

I'm leaving on Wednesday for the Ocean City, MD show so I'll have to put my old converter back in to get the car on the road for now.
