Water in gas
« on: May 03, 2010 - 04:19:10 AM »
It's been raining like crazy here in So Cal all winter, and I have had to park my car outdoors.  I have a leaky rear window, the filler tube gasket leaks, can't find a gas cap that works with the flip top, and there is a gasket missing between the filler tube and qtr panel. SO I have been getting water in my gas, which has caused a ton of grief.

We had some more rains a week or teo ago and I got another dose of water in the tank.  I thought i had stopped it with a makeshift gas cap, but didn't  Anyway I now have hopefully shored it up.  We'll see next year when it rains again.

Here are some shots I took today when I pumped out the gas tank.   In the bucket you can see a layer of water with dirt floating on top.  I think that is from my old filler tube since replaced.  The pic of the glass shows the delineation of gas and water.

I can't even fathom how so much water got in there!

I have tried a handfull of gas caps and nothing works.  I have tried all the ones available at Kragen, then I ordered one thats supposedly for a '70 Challenger and that didn't fit either.  Right now I have that cap with a bunck of rubber washers on it and it's ok. The previous owner told me he had a locking cap that worked but the flip top would not close.

Try Jim's Auto Parts for the Locking Gas Cap. (GC-771) $54.95.
I just got one and fits like a glove.

Here is the gas cap.  I have fixed it since the rains.  Added the gasket so the trim ring would fit, and replaced the filler tube to tank seal.  I also added a gasket on the gas cap to boss it up.  I think another ring or two should do the trick.

LOL i had the same issue with my 72 fish.....The current cap kinda fits but I wanted a locking cap....tried several...even tried an oem I bought on ebay that was supposed to fit....no go.

I posted a thread on this forum a while back about it.

I have had trouble with jims auto parts ,not the parts,,just the people that worked there when i had to call to exchange something,,and there prices are high,,so i wont use them anymore..the other cap i had is missing or it would be yours,,the one i use came from napa i think.or ebay. and is a locking cap and fits great,,but my car is a 72,so my fillertube may differ somewhat than yours,,but i have no problems with the cap ,here are some pictures,,the number on the cap under the key slot is JT055

Ok so today I decided to drain the tank completely to get all the water and crud out and start with a fresh tank of gas.  I put some new gas in the car and started it up.  I have the hood open and notice gas squirting everywhere!

Just by luck or chance the gas line between the hard line and carb gave out at that exact moment.  If I had not been working on the car with the hood open at that time, I would think the car would have started on fire!  It looked perfect from the outside, but upon inspection, the gas inside it was filthy, the inside was rotted out and cracked.

So tomorrow I'll replace the gas line

I think that you should have the tank removed if the fuel line is rusty, the tank will be worse, after all any rust in tank will end up being sucked forward at some stage. At least you should have trouble free fuel worries in the future.
