oil for cam break in
« on: May 05, 2010 - 03:26:10 PM »
I am getting ready to break in a new flat tappet on a 340. Is there something at autozone or the like that you can recommend using? I know I am supposed to pour over the cam and top off engine, 1500 rpm for bout 20 min. Anything else?

Redline has a break in additive. You add it to your oil.

GM has its EOS on the shelves again.  Comp and other cam makers generally have their house brands as well.  Put it on all lobes (not journals) and the base of each lifter...pour the remainder over the valley.  I would run it a bit faster..say 2000-2500 for at least 20 minutes.

I agree with you guys, but just want to make sure Indy understands that the moly that comp and others have needs to be applied directly to the lobes. Crane makes a great assembly grease exactly for this purpose.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I bought a little 4oz. tube of break-in lube at Autozone with a high ZDDP content. I forget the brand, but it was only about $6.

As Strawdog said "GM EOS" add it to any 10W30 prime the oil pump, put the distributor in then fire 'er up then to 2000RPM for 20 minutes. Everyone has been doing this since time began with no problems. also make sure the frst break in is with the inner valve springs removed. Then use the compressed air method to reinstall after break in.

The New Z Alt oil or Brad Penn is probably the best bet
they have the best mix of additives for flat tappet cams

I now have about 1,000 miles on my new motor.  I used the Lucus break in additive and a stadard 10/30 non synthetic.  Can I run Royal Puple oil "synthetic" 10/30 without having to us any zinc additives, extreme comp cam?

I believe RP would direct you to one of their XPR oils with addition zddp for use with that cam :)

I use the lube from Comp Cams.  Can buy it individual or case of 12 from Summit Racing.  Pretty cheap by the case if you can use it all.  I plan on using it in every oil change on my 468" jet boat.
