833 FLUID - HOW MUCH??
« on: October 11, 2004 - 10:52:52 AM »
Here is what I've got -
I am replacing the clutch in my car.
While removing the tranny, I lost a lot of fluid ( so that was the reason I bought the 50 lb. bag of oil dry ).
I figured, hey while I'm at it, I'll dump all of the old stuff out.
The trans itself has never done anything suspect, so while working on a budget here, I figured a good scrubing, a fresh coat of paint and fresh fluid was all that would be on hand for the tranny itself.
Now the questions I have are as follows:

I've read in a magazine that 8-1/2 quarts of 80-90w oil is needed for an empty trany. Seeing how there is more than likely still some fluid in there, what is a good way to know when she is full?

I see a little button cap on the top of this dog, is that where I need to refill this?

If I am filling it here, can I do this after she is back in place, or do I have to wrestle this bad boy around full before I put it back in place - and leak like crazy from the drive shaft out put.

Again I thank everyone for their paitience and advice, as this is my first manual trans. ;D

You need 4 qts to fill it , there is a drain plug near the bottom of the tranny & about 1/2 way up on the right side is the fill plug , 9/16 square ,fill to this line , I use a suction gun to fill the trannys , & I use the Red line synthetic oil , it is better quality & will give better fuel milage as well

I was hoping you were going to say that!!
I had read a past thread on the synthetics, I will use the Red Line.

Thank you - thank you - thank you

If you could see me right now I would be bowing to you.
You guys always take the guess work out of any project.
By the way, I tell everyone that this is HANDS DOWN, the most informative forum.

It's definitely a scent that I won't soon forget - the good news is I'm just about all back together and so far so good.

You didn't have any issues with the syncros crashing on down shifts with synthetic? When I put the A833OD in my Barracuda I filled the gear box with Mobel 1 gear lube. I couldn't get it into 1st until I almost stopped and the 3rd to 2nd was rear hard until the car was almost not moving. Drained and refilled with the specificed ATF and it's been shifting great for almost 30k miles now.

4 qts of lube will be more than enough.

Let the tranny drain for a while-there is a drain plug on the bottom.
I have used the mopar synthetic stuff for at least 10 yrs now with great success.

If you have a lot of miles on it Use 90-140 from the farm store
If not  mopar manual trans synthetic p/n 04874459 I have used the mopar synthetic stuff for at least 10 yrs and many many miles now with great success.

alternative is mopar 90 wt  p/n  04796517.

Fill to within 1/4 inch of the  bottom of fill plug hole

Do not use red line or any other synthetic lube or atf..
I have tried all of these with no success.

ATF is ok in cold climates but doesn`t offer enough protection under high load in my opinion
