Ok, I decided to go with an electric fan after stomping it and damaging the shroud a few days ago ( It was not mounted correctly) and I wanted to kick around a few questions before jumping in.

I work at a rod shop so I have a few fans to choose from but my question is how much CFM should I use on a stock 318 / 904 trans / A/C (Not used at this time) in So-Cal? I was thinking (2300-2500 curved blade). The car runs cool as a rule with the stock solid mounted fan. (No clutch)

My second questions is I am going to put it on a thermostat. I have seen them from 180-195. Which would be best? I don't want the fan to run on I am looking to only have it come on when needed.

A couple of notes...first the fan turn on should be at, or a bit above, the thermostat that is in the car...in other words, if you have a 195 deg thermostat, don't turn the fan on below that point...If more likely that you have a 180 deg thermostat, select a fan thermostat that comes on at 180-185.

And, don't forget that an electric fan can pull a significant amount of current so make sure that your alternator is large enuf to carry the fan as well as whatever else you may have installed.  Be sure to use a 30-40 amp relay to power the fan.

Great info. What CFM do you think is ok for that engine. I have a few fans available as I said but one I can get for real cheap is a 2500cfm curved blade fan. But I worry is it to much for such a stock 318. I hope to one day put a new Vintage Air System in it one day so I do want to keep that in mind now.

I would go with at least the 2500 cfm.  The curved blades should be a little quieter.  Different companies rate the fans in various ways so it is often difficult to compare from one brand to another.  Get the largest unit (sizewise) that will mount easily in order to cover as much of the core as possible.

I'm trying this fan, its out of a 2006 Chevy HHR. From what I've read about it on the net lots of people swear by them , street rodders, drag racers etc.... For the money I thought it was worth a try? I bought mine brand new from Rockauto. They have a great picture of it with dimentions on the Rockauto site too.

HHR here  I cut my core support up to move it back some for clearance! best fan for the money there is!

Jason , did you find a plug end to fit the HHR fan? I haven't yet, if I don't I cut it off and just use GM style weathertight plugs?

brad no i didnt cut it up at all! I used the gm one. its in the pic! I will post the part number for ya tomorrow! 

where did you get the matching male end? My next step is scrap yard or dealership to see if it's available and costs?

 How did you wire yours up? Did you use a thermo switch? or wire it so it stays on when the engine is running?

I welded little taps to my aluminum rad and bolted it on, but I don't see why you couldn't drill  holes in the corners and use ties, like the type they give you with a tranny cooler? Mine fit the Challenger perfect, didn't have to modify anything for the fan.

Got my HHR fan yesterday but it didn't come with any info. I see I think a blue and a white wire. Is the white ground? Also I came back but didn't see an old post about the plug. Does anyone have a part number for it?

I just looked for the packaging but I must have tossed it. Jason had a picture of it above but it seems do have been deleted? PM him and ask?
