70 Challenger, the brown wire.. where does it go?
« on: October 11, 2004 - 08:03:04 PM »
I'm hooking up the new electronic ignition and in the existing wiring harness there was a brown wire hooked to the ballast resistor opposite the 12v pole/wire. Is that brown wire suppose to be hot? Maybe it is for the tach?

Please let me know if you know if it need to go to the ballast resistor  :)

Thanks

the brown wire powers the coil , it also comes from the start position of the ign switch  , so it willl bypass the resister & give 12v to the coil while starting
the blue/ yelow wire from the electronic ign needs to be tapped into the blue wire at the oppostie end of the resister , you need to connect blact to the - coil terminal ,& leave both brown wires in place

Thanks Chryco, I figured you'd know. They have four different instructions for that ignition and no diagram. I wanted to be sure.

What's weird though is the blue wire/wht stripe is hot 12v w/ign to one side and the brown was on the opposite end with a solid blue that ran to the positve side of the coil. This side is being reduced through the resistor.  ???

exactly
the   12 v blue/white wire feeds 12 v when running , the brown wire feeds 12v only when starting , the blue wire to the + coil terminal [sometimes brown ] has 12v when starting & 8v running

Thanks, that makes sense. Another question, one of the field clips to the alternator has a brown wire coming out of it. It is about 16" in length. Any idea to what that may go to?

This is a great help ;D

you should have 1 green & 1 blue wire to the alt feilds , so I assume the brown wire is attatched to the blue wire ???
if so it has been added to the harness & was used as a 12v swtiched wire for an electric choke probably

Ah, Yes! That makes sense and its just about the correct length for a choke. It was just wrapped up in a coil and black tape when I got the car. Thank you Chryco!! ;D   I can hear that starter engaging ...... varoom
