Rear Gear Oil

What rear gear oil should I be using, 75-90? My manual doesn't seem to say.
8 3/4 rear.

I think 75-W-90 is fine or an 80-W-90. I use 75-W-90 synthetic. Don't forget to add the limited slip additive (friction modifier) which you can find in most auto parts stores, part # 04318060ab. Good luck!!

You can try it without,if it starts chattering around corners, add it.  I have found that you need it.

How many quarts of gear oil in rear end if completely empty?  Is it a little less than 4.5 pints?

The service manual say 4.4 pints. That 2 litres in Canada.

AMSOIL 75w90 SEVERE GEAR oil. It is the best on the market. Since cost always comes into play on these boards - it COSTS more then the rest of the field.

When I filled mine after replacing whole center section the manual said to fill it to the bottom of the hole.  That was alightly less than one qt.  But I had the car jacked up.  I am thinking i may need to use a pump to get some up in there.

I build a lot of high end Dana 60' and Rockwells for my 4x4's. The AMSOIL takes a beating.
I have one truck running Dana 60's on 49's (tires) and the gears (5:13's) show no sign of wear over the last year and a half.

Amzoil 75-90 Severe Gear went in. Added the Amzoil synthetic friction modifier as well.
The local dealer said I probably wouldn't need it. I didn't want to go through the hassle of adding some later if it turned out that I needed to, so I paid the 6 bucks and put it in.

You did the right thing. The AMZOIL is brutal. It's been industry tested and has smoked all of the other brands. Your local dealer was correct about the friction modifier but IT CAN'T HURT. What's another 6 bucks. You might have second guessed yourself if you didn't use it. I beat the hell out of my 4x4's in the trails and in the rocks and the AMZOIL has NEVER failed me. It should do wonders for your gears on the street.
