Thanks pywell.

I`m not really interested in a CD changer though, I think I would rather find a head unit that I could hide away some where and then plug an i-pod into. But I don`t know of anyone that makes a head unit that I could hide. If anyone does please let me know.

You could hide almost any new head unit in the glove box, I have seen some that come with remotes.

They rebuilt my am 8 track and added an added a iPod hookup with internal amp.
I now have am fm working 8 track and my iPod and it looks factory.

Anybody here mount your stereo in your glovebox and leave the stock radio in the dash? Did you leave the stock radio connected to its own speakers? Anybody try to share the speakers between units? What kind of bracing did you have to fab up? How did you finiish off the glovebox liner for a finished look or did you ditch the liner? I'm leaning strongly to putting a stock radio in the dash and a nice head unit with remote in the glovebox but would like to know the pitfalls, hints, etc. from those of you that have already done this.

You and I are thinking exactly the same.

These are the same questions I was asking myself also. But if this all turns into too much of a head-ache, I think I will just send my OEM radio out and get it updated with an i-pod hook-up, run it into an amp and put in some new speakers.

Not sure about your timeframe for doing this, but share your impressions if & when you do this. I've got several projects in front of this one for the Barracuda, so I may still be looking for the 'right' answer a while from now.

Hi JIM, I talked to a guy at a radio shop and I think Iam going to send him my OEM radio and get him to upgrade the insides digitally and add an I-pod jack to it. He also said that the amount of power that the radio put`s out, that I should not need an amp if I use 4 ohm speakers.

In the future, if I feel I need an amp I can still put one in easy enough.

Iam going to put two 4" speakers side by side in the middle of the dash in the front (nothing on left or right sides) and two 6x9`s upon the rear deck, and keep my fingers crossed that it sounds good

Iam going to use Pioneer D-series speakers and if I do need an amp Pioneer makes a Digital series GM-D8500M with an ajustable bass that should work for what I want. The radio guy is going to do the radio for $475, only bad thing it is going to take 6-8 weeks. Good prices for speakers & amps in a site called (onlinecarstereo.com). Hope this helps you out

Wow, I didn't know that was an option. Ward's Radio Service wil add a MP3 input to a stock radio but I've never heard of someone guttting a stock radio & replacing the internals that way. Ive already got 2 4" Pioneer speakers for the front like yours and 2 6x9s for the back, too. Just waiting to decide on what radio so please let me know how your radio turns out. I'm VERY interested in hearing about it.

I will let you know, but it will be awhile though. The radio guy just got my radio today and he is going to do it as fast as he can but it will still be about a month before it is done. I phoned Ward`s the other day and the guy I spoke to said that he only restores them to original, he does not up-grade them digitally

He recommended that I goggle (FM Conversions) and that is where I found the people in my area that do that sort of thing.

Thanks Steve, that looks pretty cool and the price sure is right. I saved the link and am going to look into this some more. I've got a nice AM/FM to go in the Barracuda so I'd really like to use that somehow, even if I just mount another deck in the glovebox for tunes.

With my resto, I ended up going with a totally stock-looking reproduction radio completely constructed with modern technology and features. I bought a set of RetroSound "RetroMod" speakers also built with new technology, but they fit the stock locations on my car (a single front dash speaker and two rear speakers). It works and sounds fantastic. I love the fact that it looks completely stock, but it sounds better than original and I can play my iTunes music through it (although I haven't yet had a chance to do that as the car just came out of restoration and virtually went directly into storage).

Anyway, here are a couple pictures of the parts in/for my car. They aren't great shots, but you can get an idea:

Well it took awhile, but I finally got the speakers in and the radio installed.

I fired it up and

it works

The radio works very well and the speakers sound great. The system has way more power than I will ever need.

The radio guy incorporated a fader into the dial controls on the radio and it works excellent.

My radio already had AM/FM, but if a radio only had AM he can also include FM in the new set-up also using the original dials.

The radio also has a plug-in for an i-pod, which I drilled a small hole in the storage area of the center console so it can be plugged in and also out of sight. It took awhile and I probably could have done it cheaper other ways but when I turn it on, with the way it looks and sounds, Iam glad I did what I did.

Hope this helps anyone trying to decide what to do.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind me asking: How much did the conversion cost and who did the work and do they have a website I can check out? This sounds attractive since I have a mint AM/FM radio I'd like to use, but not sure I want to gut it. Tough call, but sounds like you've got a great sounding system, congrats.
