acc won't work with tilt column
« on: May 19, 2010 - 11:27:30 PM »
i recently installed a tilt column out of a mid 70's cordoba, everything works except the unlock lever to turn the ignition back for acc is broke. rather than tearing this thing apart again is there an ignition switch [ the one on the bottom of the column] that turns acc on with the key forward?

The push lever also allows you to turn the key to the "remove key" position. Are you saying that the metal arm is broken off completely?

There is a separate section that you can use on the switch for ACC power but unfortunately, when the switch is forward the ignition is also powered on. You really need to fix that release mechanism.

Also, if you didn't know, the early ignition switch isn't available anymore. You may want to wire for the available switch that doesn't use the brown wire ignition-start circuit anymore.

something that i find odd is my key turns forward to the first position and nothing happens except unlocking the steering wheel, the next position is all accessories then start. i thought maybe some switches had acc in the first position.
as far as the switch replacement, what is the difference between the old and new, what do you have to do to switch it over?

No, all columns have an OFF position, before hitting the lock position. This allows you to turn off your car without locking the wheel. i.e TOYOTAS.

Early switch had a brown wire that powered on in the start position like your old ignition switch.  I think most new switches have the rounded circular plug on the adapter harness. Did you get the early adapter harness that plugs righ into your e-body harness? The old switches work okay, it's just that you can't get a replacement.

Stick with the old switch since you have the small harness adapters. Just don't hang too many accessories off of it without using relays. You can see that almost everything comes in on the red wire, like a regular e-body switch, then goes to the ignition and acc. wires after that.  You want to keep the load on the switch as light as possible to make it last a long time. (since the old switch isn't available anymore)
