Mecum Auction: E bodies auctioning
« on: May 21, 2010 - 08:00:27 PM »
Today I watched 3 E bodies on Mecum being auctioned. Not one of them hit their reserve. Yet the Chevies, Olds, and fords were flying.

The three cars I saw so far:

Green 70 Hemi Challenger vert (original) stopped at $700,000
Yellow 70 Cuda Hemi (not a real one) stopped at $70,000
Red/white 70 Hemi Cuda (original) stopped at $190,000

Auctioning continues but not on the block/hammer.

Mike, Fremont, CA.

T.C.-
Thanks,  I have the DVD recording the auction, 5PM til 1AM
Should have had a spoiler alert

Seriously, though, isent that par for Mecum?
The great cars never meet the reserve.

Tomorrow I'll fast forward to the Mopars and watch.
Hopefully there arent too many Cameos, Corvettes, Thunder Chickens, Moosetangs, etc...

sorry about that.
True, even an original AC Cobra went pretty high. It didn't go as high as expected either.

spent the last 3 days there and bought one E-body myself...sometimes the cars don't look quite as good in person as they do on TV, but yes, prices seemed kinda low...late last night a B5 70 Challenger RT cv sold for $65K after the gavel fell, a B5 T/A sold for $70K...both were very very nice cars...a Buick GSX brought $130K, lots of GTO Judges went thru, but were not all premium cars and the prices showed it....as I said earlier, they don't always look as good in person

ps...a 72 Duster brought $34K

Hi T.C.,
No big deal on the sales report.  I DVR'd the auction and watched it this morning.  Using triple fast forward was able to by pass all the cars, stopping only on the E-Bodies.  It's rather sad that the cars arent bringing in the money like they used to.  The convertable Chally at $700 Grand, and couldn't meet reserve.  It wasent that many years ago (or maybe it was, too many Corona beers) that a triple blue Hemi convertbale Cuda went for $1M.  Maybe the Chally looked better on TV than in person ??? :clueless:

Watching the other E-Bodies not meet reserve, even my wife commented that the money value has gone down.  And tht's not limited to Mecim,  BJ's prices have been loer, as well.

We've been watching BJ Auction for many years (every hour that Speed channel aired, my wife likes the auction).  anywho, the price tags have gone down.  I relize that this is (hopefully) a momentary situation.  I would think that the proce tags for these beautiful cars will go up again, thus: My little B'Cuda will increase in value (It's not for sale),  vendors will contnue to reproduce parts we need, and we can still turn our noses up to Chevy & Ford owners letting them know our cars are worth more (or something like that).

Back on topic; I need to win that lottery and puchase the cars while the prices are lower. :ylsuper:

Daytona is dead on with the vehicle condition in person vs. on TV.  I can't speak for the Mecum auction, but I have been to the Spring Carlise auction several times, and a lot of the cars that go through are your basic 10-20 footers.  They can look real pretty up on stage with all the shiny lights, etc, but when you get up close, a lot of them have a lot of flaws.

There is a guy local here that bought a Camaro for $25K and he got it home and told his paint guy to look at it...they lifted it up and the car almost broke in half.  Someone did a bangup job hiding rust...there was even bondo on the frame rails.  The paint guy told him he should just eat it and go out and buy another car because it would cost him even more for him to restore it.  The guy called Mecum and they said basically buyer beware.

1974 Challenger Rallye - 440+.040, 0 decked, 10.5:1, Ross Pistons, Hughes 3844 cam (238/244, .536/.540), Eddy RPM manifold, Eddy aluminum heads, Holley 750, TTI headers, .96" T-bars, IAS shocks, 1 1/8" front sway bar, 3/4" rear sway bar, XHD 6 leaf springs, Firm Feel stage 2 steering box.

Ive always wondered....im pretty good pickin out paint work and such and i see some of those low shots of the cars...and ur right ther not all super nice...mycars are far from perfect...but i also dont have stupid money invested in them either.....i know my limitations as far as what my cars are truly worth.....but i do agree there are some pretty rough cars bringing some big money sometimes....my two cents is there are alot of mopar buyers that paid premium money for these cars a few years ago and now there stuck...thats why alot of didnt sell......they just dont want to take that kinda loss....maybe it will rebound, maybe it wont???....i am glad to see the lil duster bring that kinda jing...makes me feel good for what i paid for mine....;)

I think people looking at the cars as investments drove the prices out of control. The auction shows on TV make everyone think their base model is worth 100k. Auctions are not reality. Go to any kind of auction and watch what goes on, it only takes 2 people that really want the same thing to make whatever it is sell for a lot of money. I like that show chasing classic cars, shows a lot of behind the scenes stuff and cars that don't return the kind of money the guy wants them to.

positives - more businesses make parts to bring our cars back from the dead
negatives - high prices
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

This year at the Carlisle auction a drunk guy from Canada bought a 64 Polara with a 318 Poly that was advertised by the seller as a 64 Coronet 440.  The buyer mistake the 440 model as it having a 440 engine.  Someone even asked what engine it had while on the block, and the auction guys did not even know, so they said it was a 440, too.  The bottom line is the guy had no clue what he was buying, the seller had no clue what he was selling, and the auction company had no idea what they were auctioning off.
