Carb Chokes With Aftermarket Intakes
« on: May 23, 2010 - 04:20:26 PM »
My 73 318 2 bbl has a 'mechanical' thermostat that opens or shuts the choke based on the temp of the thermostat 'coil' attached to the top of the passenger side of the manifold.  The Ede Performer has provisions for this type of thermostat but most like the Ede LD4B, Performer RPM, etc. do not.  For those of you running these types of intakes what do you do for a choke mechanism?  Did you just install a cable operated manual choke cable like I did years ago on my Roadrunner or are there other common alternatives?  I notice all the Edelbrock carbs come in 'manual' or 'electric' choke versions.  What is required for the electric versions, add-on senders, etc.?  I'd really appreciate knowing what folks here are doing and how happy they are with their setup.  I know many people used to prefer the manual chokes just to be sure they were completely open when they were racing, etc.

Thanks, Jim

I woul go electric, just a ground and a hot when ignition is on.

You can then loosen or tighten the tension on the electric coil to come off as fast or slow as needed depending on your climate and engine combo etc.

You can also adjust the choke pull off too so once it starts it cracks the blade for what is needed in your combo. Set fast idle via steps etc...:)

Electric is the way to go buddy:)   :ylsuper:

If that's all that is required to make the electric work I agree.  Sounds like it just measures the temp from the base of the carb which I guess isn't too different than my stock one that mounts to the top of the manifold and measures engine temp there.

My Holley 750 has an electric choke on an Air-Gap intake.  As Hog said, just supply it with power and loosen the screws and turn to adjust.

Where do you tap in to power, off the coil?  Just curious.
