Comp XE275HL cam in 440???
« on: May 24, 2010 - 08:32:18 AM »
Anyone here have any experience with the Comp XE275HL "Mopar" cam?

I keep reading in magizines how its suppose to be the best overall street cam for the Dodge RB engines.  Modern lobe design and made for our lifters.

Would this cam fit in a 1970 440 engine?  Would there be enough valve clearance to run the .525 lift ?   (stock heads & pistons).

I left the 509 cam springs in the heads so they should be able to handle the lift.

I would get the cam custom ground on a 112 LSA for the power brakes, so that shouldn't be a issue.

But is the cam really that good ???????  I know the XE274 was worth like 40HP over a six-pack cam and the HL is suppose to make an additional +12Hp on top of that.
(Based on the articles: stock to modified 440 & 440 Update)

So really, do you think the cam would be worth almost +50HP or are they just over rating it ??

Thanks.... John

If the compression, heads, intake system, and exhaust (plus tuning) is all in synergy, I suspect the claims are valid.  If you pull your cam out and simply stick another in, I suspect most will fall short of the claims....

Same here for the BB engines and the Lunati cams.  They flat out work.  I am referring to the Voodoo line up...    :2thumbs:

If your zero deck or even steel shim head gaskets , you may be pushing it some.   I ran a come hl275xe in my 440 before and it made good power on my 6 pack engine . I had kb237 pistons in there then with .020 in the hole. I am not able to compare it to anything else tho. It ran out of power at 6k.  As far as piston to valve goes, you need clearance. something like  .110 I  and .090 e But you would really have to actually check the cam in your actual engine.  A comp 305 hydraulic was a 525 and a 306 solid was a 555 old day stuff. I could run them both, but the pistons were like  .080 in the hole.  I run a luati Voodo solid in my car now.  I really like the power, It's a 588 lift. But I run reliefs in my pistons on this cam, since i'm .008 in the hole now with a 499.

I think it will fit but as was said, steel head gaskets and stock (no valve relief) pistons wit will be very close. But you will need to pull the heads and have the guides and spring seats machined to fit the required springs. And, no way will it run power brakes. If this was a customer of mine and the brakes had to work I'd be looking at no larger than the XE26H. If you were going to have a custom ground anyway, just get a complete custom cam grind that will work with what you have and run the brakes? CP is anti Comp but in terms of apples to apples comparability Comp XE cams are about one size smaller from a similarly marketed Lunati. The XE268H is very similar to the 60302 where the VooDoo "268" 60303 is similar to Comp's XE274H. So for the Lunati version I wouldnt go larger than 60302 if brakes are needed.

the #s might line up but the performance doesn`t , 70383SE just used the 60303 cam in his 383 with power brakes & it makes lots of vacuum , no issue with power brakes at all

The 60303 cam has nice numbers.  Duration is close to the MP six-pack cam, but with close to .500 lift.

Now, my six-pack cam has similair duration, but less lift.   Would I even notice a difference?

My thought is if I was to upgrade the cam, shouldn't I go to a cam with alittle more duration ???

Yeah, that "lack of power" is often noted by you. My experience is different...lol. I will admit the Lunati does tend to have decent vacuum even when the idle quality is much rougher. That surprised me. But power wise, very little difference when sizes are comparable.
