Patch thickness
« on: May 25, 2010 - 07:13:04 AM »
Hi,
I'm going to do some body work on my car because I need to fix some small spot of rust with fresh metal.  I'm interested to know what thickness of sheet metal you generally use to make small patches.     Do you use different thickness  for fixing the floors panels and the frame rails  ?

thanks for the help.

all sheetmetal is 1mm. I think rails are 1,5mm but I`m not 100% sure since I didn`t have any repairs on them.

19ga and 14ga should be 0,9mm  and 1,6mm  :clueless:

do you use just sheetmetal or something a little bit stronger like mild steel ?

Bart,
how much do you pay the sheet metal there (i'm just curious to know)?

I`m not sure... I cut off a square meter at work and go for it.  :woo:  I think it`s about  2 euro`s a kilo or something...  :dunno:   for repairing hollow sections I like to use zincor.  ( it`s elecrolitic galvanized and still  welding nicely)

Most older bodies are 19 gauge. I use 19 gauge .0438in - 1.11mm and 20 gauge .0375in - .953mm. 16 and 18 gauge on custom fab work like a bottom of a motorcycle tank or one off pieces.
