340 hunting
« on: May 25, 2010 - 02:25:28 PM »
I've decided to build a 340 for my Cuda and was wondering if there's a particular casting number I should be looking for or avoiding? I plan on doing a slight over bore, decking the heads etc, so I'm not too worried about low compression, but if there are high nickel, better water jackets, better main bearing bolts, I'd like to keep on the lookout for one. Since I'm in Puerto Rico, shipping can be a royal pain, otherwise I'd probably just go with a crate and stick a 6 pack on top.

1973 Plymouth Duster 340/auto (Making it Panther Pink for the wife)
2006 Honda Civic Hybrid (It doesn't save gas, it just diverts it to the Cuda/Challenger)

There is nothing wrong with a 340, but they aren't easy to come by. It might be easier on you to get a 360, as that engine was built for years and put on many different vehicles. Are you sold on getting a 340?

A 340 isn't do or die, but I've heard of a few around here. One good thing about Puerto Rico is that it's a real pain to get rid of old cars, so there are a few wreckers that only deal with old stuff. I'd consider a 360 if I can't get hold of a 340, but a 340 would still be my first choice.

I just noticed that my plate number is 343, so a new Hemi is another option too, topped with a six pack

Finding a 340 is tough, finding one that doesn't have cylinder sleeves or other problems is even tougher. Considering everything, if in your situation, I would go with the crate motor.  :2cents:
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....
