How long does the stud need to be? (keep it PG guys.....)

  I'm replacing my 14'' Styled Road Wheels with some 15'' Rallies. It looks like the return flange on the Rally wheel creates a situation where I need a longer stud, how much longer do I need to go?

There is only one stock stud part number, The stud doesn't have to come all the way through the nut. You have enough thread engagement to be fine.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Are you sure they are in all the way? I've replaced one or two and the y came out to stock length... but longer than that!

Hey glenn if those rims are cone seat then they should be fine,if there not then i would try to find a longer stud..just me

Here's what the 14's look like, the wheel sits flush on the hub.  That bevel where the lug seats on the wheel only holds it out a pinch.......It leaves lots of stud for the lug nut.....



The new Rally Wheels have a  recessed rim on the inside & outside of the lug holes, those recessed rims hold the wheel .370'' away from the hub/brake drum.....

Looks a little short to me? General  machining practices are 1.5 x the thread diameter in steel, but maybe different for automotive?

The center is supposed to crush/deform a little when the nut is torqued to keep the nut from backing off, that is the purpose of the "raised" area on a steel wheel. (and why you have to retorque aluminum wheels without this feature) Also, I 2nd what brads70 said. I think when you torque all the lug nuts down you will have plenty of thread engagement.

Sorry for the bad picture, but it is right at 1'' from the hub to the end of the stud....
The center of the new rally wheels did not fit tight on the center section of the hub, I don't think this is a ''crush'' fit.....If you look at the first picture in my original post, you can see that it's not tight.
  I'm going to go with a 1/4'' to 3/8'' longer stud.



Here is the difference in length between the front and rear studs, both are left hand threads. Maybe that's enough to be safe.

1/2" should be 1 19/32" according to the Dorman info

Just to clarify, the part of the wheel that "crushes" is the area the lug nut seats on, not the hub hole. Before you go swapping studs, mount the wheel, torque the nuts and see what the thread engagement looks like. IMO you are thinking there is a problem where there isn't one. If you want to swap studs, just get some aftermarket ones from moroso, dorman etc. and cut them to the size you want. Whatever you decide to do I hope you get it worked out so you can put your new wheels on  :thumbsup:

1/2-20 studs   20 divided by 1.5 = 13.333, so 12 turns is not 1 1/2 times the thread diameter.
