Gauge Question
« on: May 27, 2010 - 06:18:35 PM »
My car is a 71 and the original rallye gauges were stolen out of it, cut wires and all.  I ended up getting a set of 72-74 gauges.  The oil pressure, amps, and temp gauge work.  The tack, fuel, clock do not work.  Not sure of the speedo.  I was thinking that I would like to get some after market gauges to replace all inside using the rallye bezel.  Has anyone done this?  Are there any suggestions?  Thanks!
Jason

I was looking around for new gauges for mine and came across these:

found nothing to replace rallye`s though.   I received a quote for a different set from these guys but didn`t purchase...  :money: :faint: :misbehaving:

I can't help with your task of finding aftermarket gauges, but the first thing to go is the clock, then the tach. They can be rebuilt...at a cost. The fuel gauge is probably a bad sending unit. You can short the blue wire going to it to ground, then with your key in the "on" position, the gauge should read full. Here is a pic to help. I clipped the wire to a ground source.

My first car had the clear part cut out over the tach and someone had put in a SUN Super Tach in the hole. It looked good. I think it was 3"  and was behind the woodgrain part and not sticking out.   You can upgrade the clock to work with the clock kit. If the speedo is bad, you can probably fit a 3" one in there too.

Thanks MEK!  Easy enough.  I hope that I am just not getting a good signal up to the gauge as it is a brand new sending unit.  Will check it out anyway!

Do you happen to have any pics?

1-st off I think fixing what you have would be the way to go...Fuel gauge may be the sending unit, tac & clock have reasonable update kits available...IF the speedo is bad another used can be found, same with fuel gauge.

But if you really need to put new stuff in I see a few vendors with 4-way gauges, I measured my bezel & the opening is 3.6", these gauges spec at 3.26 so I believe they could be fit from the rear (would have to cut up the housing I'm sure) leaving the OE bezel & lens....no clock

No pics. That car was bought around '77 and I crashed it in '77. 3 months later. I agree that I would keep it stock looking and fix the factory gauges.  If you want aftermarket gauges, change out the whole thing.

I would love to stay factory, but I would rather have the correct 70-71 gauges instead of spending a bunch of money on getting the ones I have repaired.  I may just send off for a repro tach.  They are  about $200 and will work fine.  I wonder if I can get the faded look like the rest of my gauges??

You can get the tach rebuild kit for rt-eng, then keep your factory faded one. It's also a 7 grand tach instead of 8 but most won't notice the 7 or the reset knobs.  Just fix it and use it.

That looks like the way to go.  I was on their site and saw the repro gauges, but never thought of repairing mine.  Thanks!

I've used their clock kit to rebuild a friends clock.  I never did mine because I disconnect my battery everytime I put it away so the clock would be out of adjustment all of the time.

Was it tough rebuilding the clock?  I am wondering how difficult to change the mother board on the tach.  Has anyone ever rebuilt them?  Thanks.

The clock wasn't hard to do. The instructions are on the website, if you want to read them and see if it is something that you think you can do.  They go to the big Mopar shows around the country so you can have them install the kits there or send them to them then they'll send them back. E-mail them and ask about their schedule.
