Back up light (REPLACING A RETARDS "GOOD IDEA")
« on: May 28, 2010 - 03:19:22 PM »
Hello guys,
I have a 73 Challenger and some Mouth Breather Mechanic wired my back up lights to a switch under the dash. Trouble is the system doesn't work very well and commonly I have grounding issues, where it doesn't work at all or only one light works in the back. Regardless what my question is how does the system original work? Where is the reverse light switch located? In the cabin on the shifter or mounted on the trans? Tips would be great! Thanks!!

On a manuel trans it is on the transmission and it plugs in to the firewall.  Don't know on a auto.

same on the auto. there is a neutral switch on the tranny and it plugs in there and then to firewall at the bulk head (backside of fuse block) the switch prevents it from starting in gear as well as knowing when in reverse for the backup lights

OK, well it seems that I have a functional neutral safety switch but the back up lights are wired to the switch. i will go check on this and come back. I have a 904 with a stock slap stick shifter.

but the back up lights are wired to the switch.
They are supposed to be. The centre prong of the auto NSS is for grounding the start circuit. The outer two prongs are for turning the back-up lights on/off.

No I mean I have a toggle switch on the dash that turns I use to turn it on and off. I would like to put it back where it is suppose to be so I don't have to flip the switch on and off every time I back up.

The b/h plug for the NSS is the one on the lower left, connections 7,8. Power goes out on 8 (bk) and if in reverse, comes back on 7 (bk w/tracer). In the interior, the bk w/tracer becomes a wt w/tracer and goes to the connector in the kick panel on the drivers side. From there it goes to the lights. The wire feeding power to wire 8 is white from fuse 8

you need the clean the grounds at the back or add an extra ground wire to make the lights consistant

Maybe change "retard" to "Slowman" or something less offensive. I only say this b/c there has been poor use of this word in the past.  :sadwavey:

I remember my old man telling me how they used to do this in the old days ......some jerk would be tailing ya and you could turn on the backup lights and the guy would slam on his brakes out of a knee jerk reaction.....or at least that is the theory...LOL

Since when did we become such pussy's. Fact is when you are going threw a car the first time and see something a mechanic did that makes you  :clueless: ,  you go "What was this retard thinking?" OR "Wow man! What a retard." although some may be more graphic (  :swear: ) I respect the group and will do my best to not rock the boat because you all have honestly helped me out a bunch but are we really this soft these days. :dunno: I can understand if I was directing it at a member or being a jerk about it but if you had seen the horrific wiring, I can only explain as something out of the pipes system from the movie "Brazil"  :screwy: You might say the same thing.

I also think it is funny that we can have an emoticon like these...  :poopoke:  :puke: - but using the word "Retard" is offensive. Come on guy's it all good and it's all shop talk.  I didn't mean to piss anyone off.  :woohoo: :roflsmiley:

I tend to agree.

In the context it was used it was what I consider acceptable....though I am really not a fan of political correctness anyways.  Context is everything in my opinion.   We seem to forget that in our society these days....we are being trained to be paranoid about every little thing we say in an effort to be "inclusive" and "diverse".

Bah humbug.

I am a fat white middle aged guy, and I dont care who makes fun of fat white middle aged guys as long as it isnt made personal.

Just because someone else means something by a certain word shouldn't mean that I cant use a word the way I mean to use it.  No matter what word you would substitute in for "retard" could offend someone, somewhere.   'Mental midget" offends people of short stature....."slowman" infers you are talking about someone mentally challenged.....etc etc etc.    Just my  :2cents:

That said, I dont think anyone was picking on ya...relax...just trying to be sure no one gets offended, which is so easily done these days. We as a society have no tolerance anymore....we are all becoming more thin skinned.  Wally426i is a great guy who makes great contributions here, and this is really a great group of folks and wonderful community and it is worth looking out for all who are in it.  :2thumbs:

Well said!!

I don't want it to get to the point where we have to use terms like" When checking your timing you must make sure to advance or Developmentally disable your timing."  :roflsmiley:

Again great guys but this isn't a ladies tea party it is a group of guys trying to joke, have fun, and help each other.  :working:
Ok I will now step down from my soap box.  :blah:
