The 340 stroker has been to the dyno.......
« on: May 28, 2010 - 07:47:53 PM »
The engine has been built by Ultra Tech Racing Engines in Indiana. The only big change we made was the heads. We took off the J heads and went to Edelbrock aluminum heads. Take a look at the numbers.

I think it's actually 416 (maybe that was a fat finger typo), I believe it's .030'' over with a 4'' stroke.

Very nice! I can't wait to finally build mine! Are those out of the box Eddy heads? What intake are you running?

I think they are the 63 cc Eddies (part #60779), no port work was done. 9.9:1 compression. Air Gap intake, 800AVS Eddy carb......

Did you have to clearance the block at all for the stroker crank?  I'd consider doing this to my 340 I have to build if I don't have to grind on it.  Great numbers!  Share your driving experience when you get it broke in.

 Road_Runner,
I don't know about grinding the block for clearance..... Maybe someone with knowledge about that will jump in (I hope)....
I've got a lightly toasted stroker crank and 273 rods for sale if you need a cheap way to go to a 4'' crank.....

Hey guys,
My study shows you won't have to clearence the block. Most likely the rods if they are stock and/or use aftermarket rod bolts or go with aftermarket rods ,Eagle, scat etc. will clear w/ the 4 inch crank.
Mopar small blocks are blessed with taller deck hieght than other makes.
I'm still thinking of stroking my 68' 340 I have at the machine shop.  I planned on stock stroke to allow the highr rpm twisting I enjoy but those numbers make it enticing. hmmmm
 I love screamin' 340's .

That's the same choice I'm mulling over.  I know from some that I raced against that 340 cars even mostly stock back in the 70's were screaming cars.  They gave my big block Roadrunner much more of a run than I was expecting at the time!  So I know a properly prepared 340 with modern cam, maybe heads, intake, etc. would be even more of a handful, but like you said those numbers don't lie, over 500 TQ!! Unreal.

It depends on what rods you use.  I didn't have to grind with the cheaper Eagle I beam rods.  Grinding isn't hard to do though.

This may sound stupid, but I don't want to grind on my 'correct' 1973 dated block.  I know its not like anyone would know and it wouldn't stop me from swapping a 'stock' crank back in it, but thats what I'm concerned about.  I know .... its stupid.

Thanks, Jim

Naaaa.. stupid is as stupid does Mr. Jim. and you're just getting the facts together to do it right. I'd say yer a smart fella. You won't have to modify the block Mopar buddy.
My first 68' 340 would twist to 6,800 easy. It was pretty plain, crane 267/292-467/494 max velocity cam, J heads and factory steel crank w/ fact rods.  Some of my buddies, and others with brand X makes would say, man that 340 screams.
I'm building this one just to have fun with on a very tight budget.
I think thats why I want to keep that stock 3.31 in stroke to twist and hear and feel the unmistakeable 340 sound and power. But then the 4 in stroker makes BIG TQ w/ less effort and looks most are going that way.. but then..decisions decisions.
Best of luck to you on you'rs !
