scam or not???
« on: May 31, 2010 - 08:49:07 AM »
Hello there,

I found this ad on craiglist and was wondering if this could be a true ad. I don't live in the US.

The ad: http://fresno.craigslist.org/ctd/1761920910.html

this is the following mail he send me when i asked for more pictures of the car:

Hi,
I am selling this car because my platoon has been sent back to Afghanistan and don't want it getting old in my backyard. The price is low because I need to sell it before June 15. It has no damage, no scratches or dents, no hidden defects. It is in immaculate condition, meticulously maintained and hasn't been involved in any accident..I do have the title , clear, under my name. The car has 1,223  miles, year 1970 and VIN BS23NoB279274.
It is still available for sale if interested, price as stated in the add $13,800. The car is in Great Falls, MT, in case it gets sold I will take care of shipping. Let me know if you are interested, email back.
P.S. Please do not reply if you don't have the money or If you need a loan.
Thank you!
Steven Williams

He didn't send me the pictures I asked for, so i mailed him again:

Steven,

could you send me more pictures of the car? And why did you post the ad on craiglist with the place Fresno, CA when in fact the car is located in Great Falls, MT?

Robin

This is what he replied:

Pics: http://claspics.com/578/380240 I have posted the vehicle in several cities in order to get a fast deal and that's why you found the vehicle placed in a different location. As I've told you , at this moment I am in Great Falls, MT in a military base getting ready for Afghanistan. This means that I do a special training program and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or give calls whenever I want. The shipping can't be a problem because I can do it at no cost for you.
eBay is the third party involved that will offer protection for both of us .Let me tell you how we will make this deal:
1.You will have to give me your full name and shipping address and I will open a case.
2.You will be contacted by eBay
3.You will send the money to eBay
4. I will start the shipping  process
5.In 5 or 6 days the car and all the documents that you need to pass it on to your name will arrive at the address that you provided to eBay
6.You will have 5 days to inspect and test drive the car
7.If there are any kind of problems with the car which I don't think will be the case, you will be fully refunded and I will take responsibility to pay around $200 to ship it to the closest eBay warehouse until I find another buyer.
The payment you make will be kept by eBay until you receive and inspect the car. There is no risk in this deal. The transaction is simple , so everything should go as planned.I have to tell you I will sell the car to the first one who starts this deal by making the payment.
Have a good day and hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks!

With all do respect I still think that some nigerian people are behind the ad. What do you guy's think?? I don't fully trust this opportunity...

That has SCAM written all over it. There's no way you can touch a shaker car that looks that good for $13k.

I agree.  No question.  This a scam.  Why don't you tell him you have someone in the area that will come out to look at it in person, and see what he says?

Triple that price and MAYBE it's legit.

You'd be lucky to get a good Hemi engine and shaker setup for that.

BTW, I'm originally from Fresno.

Scam. I've seen the EXACT same car posted to numerous craigslists. There is a thread about this car earlier this month. He originally advertised it for 13,400 but then changed the ad to read 13,800

1974 Challenger, 440, auto, 17s
1983 Jeep CJ7, Chevy 350, auto, 32" tires, 2.5" lift

Here is what wiki has ot say about military bases in Great Falls;

Great Falls is home to Malmstrom Air Force Base and the 341st Missile Wing. The 341st Operations Group provides the forces to launch, monitor and secure the wing's Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and missile alert facilities (MAF).

These ICBMs and MAFs are dispersed over the largest missile complex in the Western Hemisphere, an area encompassing some 23,000 sq mi (59,570 km²) (approximately the size of the state of West Virginia).

The group manages a variety of equipment, facilities, and vehicles worth more than $5 billion.

Great Falls International Airport is also home to the Montana Air National Guard's 120th Fighter Wing. The 120th is composed of F-15 Eagles (F-15C/D) fighter aircraft and associated support personnel.

Great Falls is also home to the 889th Army Reserve Unit.

I'm not well versed in military ops, but I don't think this base is one that would be sending troops directly to Afghanistan, except for maybe the Army Reserve unit. As reservists, I'm not sure they would be involved in any clandestine efforts that would allow them internet access, but not allow them phone access.  Sounds fishy to me.

SCAM!  eBay does not work that way.  I gave my name & address once (not a big deal) and was sent an email from an ebay cloned email address...  something like ebaymotors@bay.com.  It was not real.  Read eBay's site.  They explain in detail ho they operate....
