SE door jamb plunger question?
« on: June 02, 2010 - 08:03:34 PM »
Ok, on the SE models there is a door jamb plunger that controls a warning light in the overhead console.  I don't know which warning light it controls but a bigger problem is ----- my car is a SE but does not have the plungers in the door jambs.  We have looked inside the jamb for signs that they were there but not even a hint.  The question is, did all SE's have them (plungers)?  The car is original as far as the body is concerned and I can't find the holes or where they might have been.  There is one wire that terminates in a female spade conector and looks like it would conect to a plunger.  There is just enough wire to reach the location if it existed.  Any help or comments are welcome.  I have a file pic of the plunger I'm talking about.

I thought all SE's had them.  I don't recall ever seeing one without.  They're for the Door Ajar indicator light.  I assume your car has the overhead console?

It may have just been a screw-up on the assemble line.

Yes they are for Door ajar. That is the right location. Gran Coupes had em too. any E body with over head had them. I have 2 but both were broken. Just have the screw in piece and no spring tips that fit inside.

No sign of bodywork.  Really strange since the wire is present, the car is a SE, Overhead console is present, all seams in the back half are factory.  It has me and the bodyman stumped.  I guess the only thing we can do now is locate the correct spot and add them.  I have another SE overhead harness to reference and it has the small plungers on it.  Unfortunately they are no longer functional.  If anybody has an extra set I would be interested in buying them.
Thanks for confirmation that we aren't crazy.

Ok, I found another switch at Advanced Auto that is very close to the original.  With very little modification it will work fine I think.  I'm posting pictures just in case anyone else needs this part.  In the pic you will see the original on the left and the new on the right.  I also included a pic of the new switch with the box and part number.  Guess I will just have to drill the holes in the rear door jamb to install.
Resized pics.

nope,  bs23

I don't have my books handy, but I believe there were Gran Coupe cudas as well as base model BP's. I'm betting on an A-code. Does your car have a fender tag or build sheet?

Thanks for the switch info, Red!   :2thumbs:

no bs or ftag.   I`m pretty sure it did come with an overhead console though.  what`s an A-code?

"A" codes on fender tags and sheets typically denote ordered "packages".

A78 in 1971 would get you the "SE" package on a Challenger (formal roof, upper console, etc.).

I don't find one for cudas, so I guess you'd just find a C26 for upper formed consolette.

C codes are for interior and mats.
