Mounting a Gas tank in a 73 Challenger
« on: June 03, 2010 - 08:26:31 AM »
 :aussie:
Hi guys, great chat room. I was wondering if someone could assist me or point me to somewhere I can get the specifications for mounting the gas tank up to a 73 Challenger I am restoring down here in Australia. The trunk floor and tank needed to be replaced in my car and I have a new floor from Year One and will get a replacement tank shortly. However, the straps which mount the tank are presenting a problem. I cannot seem to find (including in all the manuals I have purchased) anywhere which shows us, where we should locate the straps on the new floor for mounting the gas tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Mark. (Sydney Australia)

They don't mount to the actual trunk floor.

If I recall correctly the front ends hook into the cross member that goes across over the axle and the threaded rods at the back hook into a couple of holes in the rear cross member.

13.5 inches to the outside of the supports. these are what hold the straps to mount the tank.

Hey, thanks for quick reply. The car is at a mate on mine's panel shop (he is a good body/paint guy) but as you can imagine (probably like the UK) we dont get too many of these cars down here. It appears the there may actually not be mounting points on the new floor. I guess what would be useful is if there are some sort of spec's I could get which would show how the tank is mounted in. When I got the car from the US (at the height of the Muscle car boom) she was a little bit of a mess and missing tank and 90% of the trunk floor, so we are flying a little blind down here. I guess I could try and track down another car to get some measurements and/or photos, but I was hoping there actually may be some specs on this. Regards, Mark.

Oh yeah, sorry I remembered it slightly wrong, the mount points are in the front and rear ends of the parallel floor braces, near to the cross members but not actually in the cross members.

You must be installing a 2-piece floor.  I thought the full trunk floor came with the tank braces installed already.  It's a good thing you realised that you needed the braces.  Someone on another site had his whole car painted and tried to install the tank, only to discover he didn't have the tank braces installed.  He had to have his trunk resprayed.

Thanks dave, yeah I must admit its a little confusing. The floor is 2 piece but your photos do help enormously. Regards, Mark

:aussie:  My Challenger is in storage so I cannot check but have a look under a Valiant as they will have similar mounting points, at least it will point you in the right direction.

Much as I am a Chrysler man (Challenger, Charger and SRT8 Jeep), I have to tell you, they fall well behind Ford and GM on these areas. I have all the specs (to the finest details) on my 65 Pontiac and 69 Mach1 Mustang.

But its a Mopar thing and thats what makes them great !!
