440 over heating electric fan addvice
« on: June 08, 2010 - 03:19:07 PM »
I put a alluminmum radiator (cheap one from Jeggs) in at the same time added a/c system from classic auto.  Have a new aluminmum waterpump housing, 165 degree thremostate, and water pump from 440 source.  Live in florida.  Also have a plastic flex fan no shroud.  It's overheating below 35 mph with ac on.  Hitting up to 200 if you run it hard, but drops back down if you get the rpm's back down around 2500.  Without the ac with older radiator and same fan never got above 190 even idling in traffic on a hot day.  I am thinking of putting a double 11" electric fan.  A shroud looks like they cost little over a $100.  Electric fan system from Jeggs or Summit 250-280.  I am afraid if I spend the money on a shroud and it doesn't work, then I just have to spend more.  Has anyone got much experince with the Jeggs or Summit systems verses Coolit or Fan lite.  I don't really want to try and piece together a GM fan from a HHR.  Just not sure what to do to get the temp down and run the ac.

200-220 shouldn't be a problem.  225 and up probably isn't healthy for long hauls, but probably won't hurt it either for short bursts.  Just change your oil frequently if it runs hot long and often...

Not having a fan shroud isn't helping you. Also, you might want to go with an 180* thermostat.

Yep, a fan shroud and a stock o.e. fan will fix all your issues. Those flimsy flex fans are about useless.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

the viscouse fan clutch and shroud will cool better than any electric fan you throw in front of it (make more power )  . imop, i wouldnt waste my time . the electric fan will draw more power from your ignition system amd put a LARGE LOAD on the battery , alterneter and burn them up including the amp gauge and wireing. with that said the ford tauris fan puts out 4500 cfm and has a high and low rpm hook it up with a relay and a thermo switch then it will work with ac and  turn on and off by it self .

I have a orginal fan with the vicous clucth, but don't have a shroud.  This would be the most economical way to fix it.  If I am still having problems I can look at the electrics then.  I do have a high output alternator and the new wiring.  The head lights have been rewired with relays from Daniel Sterns lighting.  So the electrical part would proably be alright.  But I really don't want to reinvent the wheel.  I just want to drive it and be cool.  Thanks for all the advice.  It helped alot :woohoo:

Try a bottle of water wetter. We use it a lot on stock cars and it does make an improvement! I'll be using it in mine!

never heard of it Brad, I guess it is the same principal as staright water cools your engine more than antifreeze  / water mix?

It was explained to me that is that it prevents air bubbles from forming and therefore allows for better cooling? That's just what I was told though, don't know if it's true, but it does work! On stock car small blocks it does lower the temps by 10-15 Degs? Every car on the track I work at uses it!
If all you want/need is a 10 deg drop it's worth a try for under $10?

Actually, a 50/50 mix if antifreeze and water cools better than straight water. The glycol in antifreeze actually disappates heat better than water alone.

Just a FYI, not tryin to pounce on anyone.

no problem, I just heard that straight water cools better before, can't remember where I heard it.  Since I put a shroud on my chally, I really don't worry about it now, just something I had heard.
