Boar Grain or "Not Exact" Gator Grain
« on: October 18, 2004 - 04:45:08 PM »
Here's our dilema.  We have been searching and scouring the WORLD for 5 yards of the original gator grain material.  Thought we had some really positive leads in the past...one thanks to MoparMatt, but none have panned out.  We know where we can get some gator grain vinyl that is close but not exact to the original.  Now understand, our car is NOT going to be an all original car, but we're trying to keep the look stock.  We're trying to decide whether to go ahead with the gator grain because it's pretty close and many folks probably have never seen the real thing anyway, or just give in and put on the everyday boar grain until we do (but probably never will), find some of the real stuff.  Here are some pics to help you make up your mind.

Honestly Rev,
I think this is nit picking. I would go with the "new" and not think anything about it. Since you aren't "all stock", what you've got there will look great ;) I'm sure nobody at Carlisle next year will know the difference. I won't tell them either ;D

Rev,

Go with the Boar Grain.  I can't really see much of a difference, even knowing that the Gator is "correct".   If you ever find Gator, then I'd worry about which to use.

Here's a 7 page topic on the "search" for gator grain on scatpack.  Might be an interesting read for you.  Link

I'd LOVE to have gator grain for my 72.  I just got in a year one regular vinyl top though.  Haven't even opened the box yet.   :(

The only people that will know the difference will notice all the other stuff that isnt original in the first place. So its a lose lose situation. You cant please the purest without being 100 percent pure. So please the general public and your pocket book and your stress. Go with what is avaliable. The girls (not that we are tring to please them) like nice rides. Not correctness.

It seems as though the original Gator Grain material would stand out better in contrast to the body color. I vote to stay on the hunt as there can't be many places left for it to hide. Having said that, the new Gator Grain would be the next choice but somehow i think ya's have already arrived at that conclusion.
The "easy" solution would be to search hard until it's absolutely time for the vinyl top to go on, then go with the closest you've found. Of course that's when Murphy's Law would kick in and a fresh roll of the correct material shows up on eBay with a "buy it now" of five bucks :P ;)l

We're just about at point where we need to make a decision and get that top on so we can get the windows in and finish the interior.  I think I'm leaning towards getting the "new" vinyl.  It's not terribly more expensive than the boar grain so I wouldn't be loosing a lot if I did eventually find the original.  Decisions, decisions....

You've probably already tried this, but in an article in Mopar Muscle:

“The original material headliner and Gator Grain vinyl for the vinyl top came from Legendary Auto Interiors.” Legendary Auto Interiors, Ltd., Dept. MPRM, 121 West Shore Blvd., Newark, NY 14513; (315) 331-0903; (800) 363-8804, fax: (800) 732-8874.

Yep we tried it.  They depleted their supply about 5 years ago...and then they were going for $800 a top.  Would gladly pay that now for original.

It's a rare option so who's gonna know anyway! Last time I saw a boar grain was over 15 years ago! :)
