Head Gasket 0.030
« on: June 13, 2010 - 05:36:25 PM »
Folks,

I just bought 340 for my 73 barraCuda! I have couple question urge yours expert to help!!

1/ I remove cylinder head, there are 30 casting on top of piston, is that mean 0.030 over bore? If its 0.030 bored which Head Gasket I must use? I mean are these Head Gasket same from Standard Bore to 0.030, 0.040 and 0.060? Can I just buy the one from like Advance, Napa?

2/ I like to replace the Oil Pump Drive Shaft/Distributor Gear (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DCC-3690715?part=DCC-3690715). Is there any mark on the (Oil Pump Drive Shaft?Distributor)Gear align with Camshaft Gear? If no, How do I properly install this Drive Gear?

Thanks in advance.

The head gaskets will fit all bores up to  .060  the thickness of the gasket helps increase or decrease the compression a little.

The distributor drive is also the drive that spins the oil pump. Why do you think you need another?

Moparal,

I need another distributor drive shaft because the "slot" on top of the gear worn out little bit.

About the Head Gasket, Im thinking of buying a thicker one for "enhanced detonatiod resistance"- I want max life for the 340 cylinder wall. Anyone ever try that? Will a thicker Head Gasket make the engine hard to start in the morning(or when its cold?)

Thanks!

If it's a 340 and you didnt have issues in the past with pinging, Id run the thinnest gasket you can get. I don't think you'll have any issues even with a stock (small) cam running the thin MP gaskets.
