What's Needed To Make my 1970 Challenger Into a 'Roller'?
« on: June 14, 2010 - 08:07:34 PM »
Out back: springs, a functioning rear end housing containing axles to bolt the wheels on to. I plan to purchase a new front set of Monroe Gas-Matic shocks; am I needing anything else in the back?

Up front: my mostly complete rebuilt motor/rebuilt trans/most of the front suspension is together and bolted to the k-frame. The front spindles still need to be installed and I have the rusty rotors that were on the car when disassembled more than 3 1/2 years ago. The car's original 780/781 torsion bars are in my possesion along with the 'transmission crossmember' - am I using the correct term/description here? I'll be purchasing a new transmission mount along with a new set of rear Monroe Gas-Matics; once again, am I missing anything for the front?

I expect my car to remain in a 'roller' state for two to three years before the rebuild resumes.

The "Roller" term means the car will roll if you push it.  :2cents:

The tortion bars and spindals have to be installed, you got the rear stuff covered. Are you going to want to install the engine n trans while you wait the 3 yrs?  You know I can do all that for you in a day if you need me to. Your steering column and box would be good as well.

There's been no paint added since those pictures were taken last November...

The steering column and steering box...I forgot all about them :bricks1: The steering box is at my house but the column is at the shop owner's home garage along with the motor/trans/k-frame.

Yes

You know I can do all that for you in a day if you need me to.

This car is now spread over three locations in two counties (four locations in three counties when you count the rear) and I have no way to gather everything up to your shop, then back down to Montgomery.

Well, when we can find time, you can
1  pick up the rearend
2  pick up my car trailer
3  I can load up with a lot of specific tools and if the body shop owner lets you, we can install the rear and the front end on your car, steering box and column as well.  Load up your engine and trans in the back of your truck, and I can install it over your house or at the owners shop....You buy lunch   Try ro make sure you have specific bolts ready to be installed.  We can get your car home easy enough.

Thanks Neil, after this much time i'm just getting antsy :hyper: Even though my car is in the hands of Mopar guys through and through, the work is happening at a collision shop with a small staff and not a true Restoration facility.

Also, I only found out last weekend that the shop owner was diagnosed as having had two recent heart attacks that he wasn't aware of.

Some things are out of our control and i've always been a put-the-other-person-ahead-of-me kind of guy but isn't there a point where you have to look out for #1?

crap :walkaway:

Much appreciated Al, but since they disassembled everything, I believe that they should be who satisfies this customer.

*Fer cryin' out loud Russ, stop whining :nono: Yes, some things are out of your control but the work - or lack of it - being done to your car isn't one of them. Pull the plug, move on, and resume when things are better and the Challenger can be finished the way you want.

*Now, about that old truck you've been driving for nearly (18 August will be) 24 years.  :stirpot: :aarg:

*I caught the movie 'Wanted' with James McAvoy last night. Great final scene :2thumbs: Hey, inspiration's where you find it  :thinkerg:
