Starter relay went bad on my 71 Cuda?

Im about wrapped up with my resto on my 71 Cuda, Auto Trans

I havent had any past probs with the starter, starter relay or the ignition switch.   Up until now that is................I went to crank it today, and have power to the stereo, etc, but I have absolutley nothing when I go to crank the engine.  No clicking, nothing.

I can jump the posts on the starter relay, and it cranks just fine

The starter relay looks very old, and Im thinking it just went bad?

Auto trans...? Was anything moved or altered in relation to the colum & linkage. I went nuts for a day  only to find I had to readjust the rod....

Mine does the same thing sometimes when starting it from PARK.  All I do is slip the trans into Neutral and start it.

Had mine go bad on the Chally a few years back - had an event I was going to (of course) so as you said I jumped mine at the box for that day then after a 2 day wait got one from a store at home.

Thanks Guys.   Ill get another today:  Easy $15 and it very old anyways.   Its an auto trans, shouldve said.   Ill double check the plug at the tranny, as well as the connector at the firewall just in case

Easy why to check the neutral safety switch is with a DVM.  Just take off the connection at the fenderwell (near battery)and measure the resistance to ground when in park or neutral.  It should be a short, or near 0.

I had similiar problem as stated, replaced starter before figuring out my linkage needed adjustment.  It used to start in Neutral when Park wouldn't work, as stated above, then it just wouldn't start.

Use a good test light to check the circuit before touching anything, so you'll know that you fixed the right side.

With the test light's ground wire hooked to the positive battery terminal, touch your probe to the small terminal (non yellow wire) on the starter relay. The light should be on when in park or neutral. (or clutch pushed in on a manual trans.

With your test light's ground wire hooked to the negative battery post, touch your probe to the small terminal with the yellow wire on it. The light should come when you hold the ign switch to the start position.  If not, then start at the Ign switch connector's yellow wire, then start following it through the bulkhead connector all the way back to that starter relay.

Using the test light is the most simple, quickest way to find the problem.

Thnx for the help  It was the main harness connector at the firewall.  It had pulled slightly loose.
