Buddy of mine had a similar problem recently, engine would not rev high, that turned out to be a bad mechanical advance in the distributor. Worth checking before tearing down the engine.

Yep that is possible too. Can you put a timing light with adjustable advance type gun and watch the timing to see what it does? Also you dont have vac advance do you? 

Are the valve springs weak or maybe a broken one on the inak valve or valves?

an update the cam timing was off in the process of putting it back together.hard to see in a dimly lit garage.Thanks for all the advice.

well all is good know.Took the time this time and dreed the cam in got it to within 1 dgree of where it is suppose to be 106 manufacture 105 mine with 110 lobe center line puts it at 5 degrees advanced.Runs like a champ plulls real good up to 6500.Thanks for all your help.Now I can take on some hondas or new cameros.
