For reference, I have the same size rear tire as Brad. At 62 MPH, I'm at about 2650 RPM or so.

Oh crap!   :banghead:

Yeah, I have a 3:23. I wanted to say that but I apparently had a senior moment.   :pullinghair:

This talk of diff ratios is all very interesting  Im not sure what i have? Its open centre,27.5 inch tyres and at 100 kmh im doing 2100 rpm. Thats with a 318 4 speed. Im debating about the 3.91 gears and trutrac for when i install my 440! Its very sluggish down low but great on highway. I dont care about fuel mileage  I want to do lots of  :burnout: and take her down the strip once a month or so....... I too only cruise local. Would the 4.10 ratio be going too far for 1 hour long cruising every so often??? I just want to get the most out of the 440 when it happens.
Any thoughts guys?? :dunno:

You really need to consider tyre height with rear end gearing.

Just for reference my challenger with 440/727 has 3.23 with 28" for 2600rpm @62mph

My 69 barracuda with 440/727 has 3.55 with 28"tyre for 2800rpm @ 62mph
I put some 3.91s in it for a while but it went no quicker on the quarter so I went back to the 3.55s

My 67 Valiant ute with slant6/904 has 3.7 with 27" tall tyre for 3000rpm @ 62mph.

I'm currently doing a 72 Dodge dart Swinger. It's got a mild 318/904 and I've got a 28" tall tyre under there. The diff I made has 3.23s but I'm thinking I'll probably be putting 3.7s in there to make a fair highway cruiser with an acceptable level of pep.

I don't know how comparable the engines are in your Barracuda & Challenger, the Chally is definitely spotting your A Body Barracuda some extra pounds, but can you say if the 3.23 vs. 3.55 makes any noticeable difference off the line?  through the gears?  Sounds like they're both so close its almost not worth changing from one to the other?  I've got a 3.23 open chunk I could add a posi to for the Barracuda or I've got a drum to drum E Body 3.91 Sure Grip I could just swap in but I'm thinking that's too steep for my plans.

Mate,it's a bit like comparing apples to oranges.
Both cars are very different animals to drive.
The barracuda is a street'n'strip car and it's built to hook and does it very well. But it only uses 5200 useful rpm to achieve best terminal mph.If it had more of an engine that rpm'ed higher the 3.91s or even lower would probably come into their own.

The challenger is more of a show car so putting the power to the ground isn't of concern. With this in mind it'll blaze the tyres if you stand on it.The 3.23s make it feel like a lazy cruiser which is fine for that car.

With a 440 you've got all the torque in the world to push any ratio.Selection mainly depends on intended application.

I've just taken my diff out to have the whine checked out - end of story...it's toast. Its a 3.55 suregrip in a 489 case. I don't like the higher gearing and was thinking of going down a bit to get a quieter cruise and maybe a better gas mileage. Engine is 383 and I've not long ago installed a lunati 60303 cam (a little milder than what I originally had). I really love the performance but don't mind a bit of a compromise. I have a chance to get a second hand unit with a 3.23 posi with the clutch setup. Can someone give me some feedback about whether the 3.23 will be any good?? Cheers!

Depends upon your tyre height.
My brother has a 65 Fury 383 with abt the same size cam as yours.
It is 3.23 with a 28" tall tyre and is VERY sluggish off the mark.In top gear it doesn't pull hard till 70mph+

Thanks for that. Good point. I've got 235x60x14 and only 24 1/2 inches tall which will be better than 28s I think.

Here's a visual speed and RPM calculator.

Choice of auto or 4 speed. Set the throttle for the speed and then change the tire size and gears to see the change in RPM's

The 489 is the more desirable case. Larger yoke etc.. And you're right, the 3.7, 3.9 gears are not the best for extended hwy use, just fun on the street/track.
I agree.

Shadango, have you thought about transplanting a A-500 or A-518 to pick up the OD gear?  I'm running 3.91's and the A-518 that Tactransman built will turn it into a 2.74 on the higway...best of all worlds.
