Best place to find transportation (car haulers)
« on: June 23, 2010 - 02:47:33 AM »
Hi all,
If the planets stay in alignment then I will be in need of transport from Arkansas to California very soon... next week.   :jumping:

Does anyone on this forum haul cars?  I've looked at a few companies and the quotes range from $800's to $1300's.   :clueless:

Could use some help, tips, pointers...   :feedback:

Thank you!

Alan

What part of AR? What Part of California?
The price seems not unreasonable, it's very hard in the freight industry with fuel and insurance so high.

DO NOT use DAS !  They did $ 4000 damage to my car and took 4 months to get it to me! Dumped it and ran before I got there! Then walked away, never paid the bill!

Harrison AR 72601  to Simi Valley CA 93063

I know I'll have to pay something in that neighborhood...  just hard to tell who to use.

DAS is out then...  Have read mixed reviews on FedEx... will investigate them further...

Anyone ever use Checkered Flag Auto Transport out of Carson CA?

Thanks all,

Alan

Another negatory on DAS. Had a friend move from CA to NC. Our company was paying to ship his car. They couldn't get in touch with us after one phone call and sat on the car in CA for two weeks before he personally called them back wondering when his car was arriving.

Oops!

This is murky territory at best.

I used FedEx custom critical, but in the end, I wasn't dealing with FedEx at all. Just some toothless guy with a trailer traveling back and forth across the country. They sub-contracted to him since he was heading in my direction. I had no problems, but I'm just saying I think a bunch of companies might sub-contract like this.   :dunno:

John,
For some reason I can't use PM from work.  To answer your question... YES...  If insurance is covered then let's talk.  :)

Thank you

I just went through this, shipping a 66 Charger from Dallas, TX to Rhode Island for $750.00.  The broker I worked with gave me all the details about how this works.  Keep  in mind that when you are looking at brokers (ie any company in Florida), they are only the middle men, so it does not matter who you go through unless they personally own their own trucks, in which case you will pay more.

When you contract with a broker, they post your route on a master board that ALL of them use, and the drivers simply enter their current route and all the available pickups will show up.  The going rate a couple months ago was $0.35 to $0.40 a mile, so get the distance you are looking for, multiply by $0.40, and that should give you a high estimate for what it should cost.  It's basically like an auction, the more you offer, the more likely it will be picked up faster.  When estimating your price, keep in mind that the broker will keep $150 or so as their fee, and the balance is what goes in to your cost per mile.

Based on your zip codes, you should be right in the ballpark of what I paid.  If this is not a show car, I would not spring for the enclosed trailer IMHO.

P.S. To answer your question, here is a good place to find reputable shippers:

We went with a company called Creative Rides Transport.  The rep I spoke with was very informative and told everything about how the system works.  He even sent me a list showing the top 5 cars by offers that fell on my route.  We basically started at I believe $725, which was pretty low compared to the other quotes I got.  A couple days after listing it, a driver contacted him with a sort of counter offer that increased the price to $750, and we went with it.

Beware of the lowball quotes, though.  I started out with a company that said they could get it shipped for $600, and it sat for a week with no contact.  While talking with the rep from Creative, before I changed my contract to them, he pulled up the list and was able to tell me there was no way in he11 our car was going to be picked up at that price, because we were so far down the list.

Fascinating how this works... real supply and demand...  I've talked to Easy Car Move (one of the top rated on that website) and they appear to be very helpful as well...

Thank you for hooking me into this!

The going rate a couple months ago was $0.35 to $0.40 a mile, http://www.transportreviews.com/

The website I use for transport is called Central Dispatch. I've never seen .35/40 cents a mile (not in a long time)and enclosed is usually more. Thats a really good rate! But sometimes you can catch a break when a guys going your way anyway and has open space on his trailer!
