EARTHQUAKE in Ontario......?
« on: June 23, 2010 - 04:00:49 PM »
So I'm working on the car when I thought I say it shaking? I suddenly felt dizzy and nauseous?? I went over and shook the car thinking my eyes are playing tricks on me when my wife rushes out of the house all excited and says"Did you feel that? we just had an earthquake!"
Turns out it was a 5.5 earthquake right on the Ontario/Quebec border? ( a couple hundred miles away)
Weird huh? never felt that before? Still feeling dizzy????

I only felt it once. It's strange feeling it when you haven't been drinking.

Easter. I think 1984. I was living on the third floor of an apartment building, so I just thought it was the water pipes vibrating.    :screwy:  I really didn't know until seeing the news the next day what had happened.

5.5 eh?

Out here people stop, look around, and then go back to whatever they were doing. Always a good wake up call though.

Was that your first one? I've been thru dozens of them. I can remember the Loma Prieta earthquake like it was yesterday. Epicenter was only 5 miles from me. What I learned from that was it wasn't the first one that scared the Hee Bee Geebies out of me; it was all the aftershocks days after that freaked me out.

It was reduced to a 5.0.

One more thing, depending on where you live, the ground below can either transfer the waves alot or a little. For example if where you are at is a soft underground, yeah a 5.0 can feel pretty strong. Take that same 5.0 on a mountain and it's just a strong jolt which reduces the wave that is felt.

I never felt it because I was driving in a van around town.
This area of North America has dense rock so the shock wave travels further.

You guys in California have them all the time in the 2's & 3's and I noticed your getting lots of activity along the Mexico border near San Diego.
I was watching a ball game on TV when Toronto was playing the Padres and they had a 5.9 hit.
Nobody got too excited because they are use to it.  It's like anything that happens constantly your body & mind just adjust and adapt.
Can't wait till Winter!!

I was in a quake in Ottawa in 1985 Brad. Apparently there is a fault line that runs approximately from Toronto to Montreal. Wakes up you southerners once in a while.

I grew up on the wet coast of Canada and went through a few little ones. The biggest was while I was driving to work and thought something in the front end of my truck had broken. We had a 5.7 in Puerto Rico a month or 2 ago while we were over at a friends house. Everybody was freaking out and I just watched a table lamp dance.

Hey Brad, I felt that a bit,  a jumble, a pause, then felt it again. Honestly I just figured it was a truck rolling over a pothole in the street. But there was no truck noise? Later saw the news report and the fact that it had indeed been felt down here in Ohio, this mornings local paper also had a story where other people in the area who felt it, even to the point of window blinds swaying slightly.  Around one in the afternoon, I was out on the back deck with a sandwitch and a beer,................just one     and my first of the day too !   :roflsmiley:
