1971 Orange Cuda 340
« on: June 23, 2010 - 05:10:21 PM »
our cuda is going in the paint shop this weekend. I want to make it look almost exact to OEM Specs. However, i see so many different 1971 setups online for that year. I see none of them with the raptor style hood tho, most are with the shaker.

So here are my question on the car and hopefully some of them can be answered with either a easy description or pictures would be best.

1. On the rear quater of the car does it say 340 or does it have hockey stripes ?
2. is the hood black or orange ?
3. is the roof black or orange ?
4. i have seen grills now orange, black and chrome/silver which is the true OEM way ?

This car doesnt have a fender tag or build sheet so im working with really just a VIN. Once again i want the car to look as close as OEM as i can. Its a 340 car with a 3 speed manual, im so new to these cars unforntely im not to sure which way is correct. This used to be blofish and pickice's car. so, most of the information i already know im just finishes this thing so i can start my 70 cuda.

I'm not strong on the Cuda knowledge, but here goes..

#1, The hockey stripes were a '70 only thing. Your car might have had a build board style decal with the engine call out, which was a 71 only thing.

#2, and #3, The hood and roof should be body color, unless there was a vinyl roof.

#4, Argent silver, or body color.

My best guess here, but hopefully others will chime in.

This is just my 2 cents on it.
probably wasn't a billboard car due to the car being low option car(3 spd?)without a buildsheet or a fender tag there is no way to know for sure.Did you strip the rear quarters? If they were originals?you would have seen signs of glue residue or parts of the decal? My 340 71 wasn't a billboard car but had them on it,after it sat for a while in my garage dust collected around the edges of where the decal was(kinda shocked me a little)
The other side of the car is that it will be ORANGE everywhere and you may want to use the billboard to break it up some?

Yup Billboard.

As far as the grille goes:

If it had black headlight bezels, it was a argent silver grille.
If it had chrome plastic headlight bezels, it was a color keyed grille.

If you plan on making it correct with a color matching grille; only certain colors had them. I can't remember them all. Orange, yellow, were two of them. Plum never had it.
