Bit the bullet an bought a new cam!!!!
« on: June 24, 2010 - 04:41:15 PM »
Hey guys an gals. We have a very special day coming up known as Mopar Sunday. So i thought id better change the cam in my 318 as it was pretty rattly. I do have a 440 waiting to go in the chall,so it was a tuff call to spend the $$ on the little 1!!!!! Anyway the specs are: Dynatech.    lift in is.444 lift ex is .467   .050 duration in is 214 and ex is 224....
And i got sealed pro lifters. Not sure what else is important? Turns out the heads have had some intake port work as they have a linished finish right upto around the valves. Not sure about exhaust? Can somebody tell me what is the best way to run the cam in on first start up?? Ive been told fast idle around 1500 too 2000 rpm for 20 minutes and or drive it up and down hills and under load for so long????? Any help appreciated.

you will probably need a new chain also & I would recommend degreeing in te cam at install if you can
the cam need s to be run in at 1800-2000 rpm for 20 + minutes to keep enough oil splashing up onto the cam during break in you also must have a break in additive in the oil with increased ZDDP content or the cam may fail

Thanx Chryco. I just lined up the o marks on the 2 gears. I did buy a new chain set as well, the other set was stretched a fair bit. I got a bottle of comp cams engine run in additive to mix with oil and im going to run in with 10w-40w elf oil. The cam came with some red thick lube to put on lobes and lifters which i will do tommorow when i get home.

Well i completed my first cam install with success  :bananasmi Not without a bit of concern but  :clueless:...... Went to fire her up an it was back firing out of the carb  ??? So i checked the timing setup again..... Top dead centre, number 1 rockers stationary, piston up top and the rotor was facing no 1 lead.  :clueless: :dunno: Thought dizzy must of been 180 deg out,so tried that and was still the same?????? Rang a mate and he suggested to retard dizzy by 15 mm. After i lined all the timing up again and moved dizzy 180 deg i did that and hey presto  :woohoo: Fired straight up  :ylsuper: Cam dosent make car shake but it does run smooth and have plenty of go! Thanx to Cudachall74 for all his help with motor and beer consumption  :aussie:

That cam is virtually the same as the 340 cam which works really well in the 318 for good street performance.

Well mopar Sunday is nearly here so I thought I would try my 730 dp that I bought for my 440 on my 318. Turns out the squirters were missing from the carb. So I took it to a parts dealer and after checking the numbers it turns out I have a 650 dp instead and it's not an annular discharge like I was told????? Anyway I'm real happy with it being a 650 now as it should make the little 318 perform well with the new cam/mild port work and a manual box  :burnout: I'm running a single wheeler diff and going to put 14" wheels on the back for skidding down the quarter on Mopar Sunday! Can't wait
