Help selecting a clutch? (sort of long)
« on: June 28, 2010 - 08:41:35 AM »
It's an A833 behind a 383.  The motor is on the mild side.  906 heads, good exhaust manifolds, a DP4B intake with a 650 cfm BG carb on it.  Cam is a purple .484 that I just advanced 4 degrees.  Car was a mess when I got it with mismatched components.  After a lot of work and matching things up it's starting to run pretty good.  I just put a 3.54 geared Dana in back and it needs a clutch.  It's looks to have some kind of parts store variety diaphram clutch in it that feels like it's on the way out.

CP recommends B&B/Long from McLeod.  That would mean a lighter disc to help the synchros in the trans.  That would be good, but I want to put a 470 in it at some point.  Parts I'm currently looking at are as follows;

Pressure Plate = 2200 lbs 10.95 with counterweights part # 360953

Clutch = 600 series 11" part # 260621

Flywheel - Ram Auto # 1503 6 bolt 28 lbs for 10.95" Borg and Beck

It's a street only car but the 470 would probably put out 550 or more ft lbs.  What do you guys think?  Problem is that it's more than the 383 needs but probably not enough for the 470.

using too much clutch behind the 383 will nto cause any problems so that is what I would do

True, but I'm sort of following someone elses lead who was going to move down from a #2400 to a #2200 plate and then move up from a 500 series to a 600 series clutch.  So that is the one setup I'm considering. I've not felt anyones clutch setup due to working responsibitilities.

For those McLeod clutch guys, do you have any opinion on the pressure plate and disc I have listed??  Is this going to be enough clutch?

My Catalog doesn`t list the 600 series disc
 I would call McLeod directly & discuss your needs with them & see what they recoomend as the best fit

One item that I have to recommend is purchasing the clutch that suits your needs.  Clutch technology has changed over the past 4 years with respect to materials and compounds on the disc.  One REALLY COOL set-up is the RST series of clutches.  These debuted at the 2006 SEMA show.  The holding power is good to 700+ HP and the pedal effort is like a stock clutch.  Best of both worlds.  Retail is around $850.00 for the clutch and pressure plate set-up.  I heard of people shopping and getting it for $150.00 less.  Remember this rule of thumb and this is what I tell everyone when I talk to folks regarding Tremec 5 speed conversions.  The higher performance series of clutches are great for holding - but you may sacrifice pedal effort and clutch chatter.  It's all in what you want to live with.  Read carefully and compare and by all means call the McLeod tech line.  Down be surprised if you don't get Red Roberts the owner.  He's a great guy and a VERY talented engineer.
