4 speed identification
« on: June 28, 2010 - 03:51:43 PM »
How do I figure out what transmission I have in my car? I can't really see the casting number on the side, but with a little cleaning I might be able to

What is it your are trying to determine?

The '70 4 speed (common 23 spline) had 2.65:1 1st and the early syncro's.  The 71-74 had the later syncro's and 2.47:1 1st.  The 71-74 can be identified by looking for a rib on the side cover connecting bosses where the shifter arms attatch.

I'm trying to figure out what year the tranny is and anything else I can. The car started as an auto so I don't know anything about the 4 speed. If I need to replace anything on it I don't want to guess and buy the wrong parts. There are a few leaks on it around some of the seals so I'd like to replace them as soon as possible

Does it have a VIN pad on the passenger side?

If it does, what are the numbers on it?

If no pad, then it would be from sometime in 1968 or earlier.

you could post a picture of it , it is doubtful it would be pre 70 as the tailshaft didn`t have a mount pad for the shifter to mount in the correct location

Here's 3 pics I got of it. The car is on the ground so I had to crawl under. They aren't very good pics, but they might help.

On a side note, what is this thing? It's On the rad support behind the left headlight.

Could be a compressor for some kind of horn?
Could be an electric siren for an alarm system?

What does it do when you "hook it up"?

I haven't tried to hook it up yet. I thought it might be factory because there's a bracket behind it that it's attached to. I'm a little spooked with the idea of hooking it up before I know what it's supposed to be.

That's what the top looks like after I scraped off some of the flat black that it was hosed with. There are 2 terminals and 3 things that look kind of like hose hook ups along with a thing with a cap on it. There's a wire coming off the bottom part that goes to the positive on the relay? on the drivers inner fender and I'm guessing it's a negative that's taped off and just sitting there.

Quick question here. I want to check my trans fluid and don't know where the fluid fill is on it. Is it in any of the pics I posted so I can check it before the weekend?

It's on the passenger side, about 1/2 way up, on the main case (pipe plug).
