Volt meter relay...
« on: June 28, 2010 - 10:50:03 PM »
Finally got my charging system working correctly after a complete vehicle rewire.  I have the volt meter fed off the "hot" alternator post.  Problem is, the gauge stays hot even when the car is not running.

Do I need to put a relay (on the ground side of the gauge) using a switched 12V source to cut power to the gauge when the vehicle is off?  Just curious as to what other folks have done...

Most, including myself, just run a 12v switched wire from a radio circuit, gauge circuit, cig lighter, etc. That will also give a little better idea of how the whole system is doing versus right at the alternator, the alternator can be kicking out, but the system is eating up the current and still be running "low voltage" to the car, but you wouldn't know it based off the back of the alternator.

At the bottom of the fuse box you have 2 spade terminals. One is BAT the other is ACC.  You can plug it into the ACC one.
