shifter stuck
« on: July 07, 2010 - 11:55:59 AM »
I took the car out today because it was well...... today. I ran over to a friends house to get a little help with timing and carb setting, then I went to the bank and Auto Zone. The car was shifting fine the whole time with just the usual fighting to get it into third a few times. Got to Auto Zone and parked on a slight incline so I hit the e brake, grabbed the stuff I needed and went to leave. The car went into reverse fine, but the car felt like the brakes were locked up. So it wouldn't move. I checked the e brake etc and finally got it into neutral and the car rolled just fine. When I went to put it into first I had to fight with it again but it finally went in. When I tried to shift into second the shifter wouldn't come out of first gear at all, let alone let me get into second. I limped the car home in first gear, trying all the time to get into second so I could build up a little speed but I still couldn't get it out of first.
I don't know if it's the shifter that's being jammed somehow or if it's the actual transmission that's having the problem. I'm going to give it a really good look right now and see if I can disconnect the shifter and find a problem.
Anyone have any idea what might be the problem?
It's a 4 speed, but I don't know what make/model/year/part number or anything else about it. It has a Hurst shifter on it, but not a pistol grip if that helps at all

My shifter always seems to get stuck in reverse as well, normally I just give it a quick hard jerk and it pops right out.

I also had a similar problem with it getting stuck in first, after getting it home, I found that the nuts holding the shifter plates on the tranny were so loose they were about to fall off! Installed lock washers and have not had a problem since :2thumbs:

The plates seem to be ok. I can move the middle bar quite easily, but the front and back ones seem to be stiff and it's hard to get any torque the way I'm laying on the floor. I'm going to try to pull the shifter out now to see what's going on.

I took out the 2 big bolts that hold the shifter in place up top, and the two bolts with stops on the front and back of the shifter(I don't know what they're called or what they do) I didn't disconnect anything else, just moved the shifter around a little and it started working again. I put it back in place and put all the bolts back in and it's still working. I'm hoping the linkage just got a cramp and it will be ok now, although I think that's highly unlikely. At least I know the cure if it happens again. Next time it's up on the hoist I'll take a better look. There was very little play in the bars when I tried to move them, but that's another job for another day too

I took the car out for another test to see how the car shifted and it was fine. Still a little tough to get into 3rd but other than that it was great

Third/ fourth rod may be in there the wrong direction and rubbing on the crossmember, try flipping it to the other side and see if that frees it up.

Does it move freely side to side between the 1-2 & 3-4 gates , if not the rods may need to be adjusted for length so the gates line up properly

I've decided to tackle the transmission shifting issue today. It goes into 1st 2nd and 4th fine every time, but 3rd only goes in some of the time without a problem. I know I've posted some of the symptoms before, but I thought I would post them all in one post. When I shift into third, if it doesn't go in right away it grinds. If I rev the engine then press the clutch and shift it goes right in. I checked neutral between 1/2-3/4 and it moves easily. I can hear a little click like knuckles cracking when I shift to third with the engine off. It sounds like something hitting plastic. I slid under the car and tried to move the shift rod, but it's tight so I don't think it's a worn shift plate. When the shifter was binding on me I took out the two big bolts and the front and rear stops and put them back in the same spot and it didn't hurt or help anything other than un-binding the shifter.
A few questions now. If I move the stop to give me more forward play, will that effect 1st gear by shifting past the gear? If I adjust the 3/4 rod to give me more travel into third will that effect my fourth gear shift?
I've talked to a few car guys on Saturday night about the problem, and it was about a 50/50 split on whether it was a syncro issue or a shift rod issue.
On Saturday when I went for a long drive I shifted into third 7 times in a row(yes I counted) without any problem, then the next two times it grinded, then it was fine for the next few. It grinds up-shifting and downshifting

eliminate the shift rod problem , it i seasier to fix , if it stiil grinds it is probably internal or the clutch is dragging & not releasing 100% so check that too
In neutral both shift levers should be centered both with each other & the center of the shifter bodt , you can slide an allen wrench in through all 3 levers to get them centered , you may  disconnect the rods & adjust the length to get both shift rods the same length into the shifter .
If that doesn`t help try changing out the oil to new fluid , sometimes that helps
