PT Cruiser tranny question.

I am looking at a 2001 PT Cruiser that won't shift into OD and has a check engine light on.  I don't know any more than that.  Just wanting to know what the usual suspects would be ( if there are any ).  I know it's not much to go on, but if there's a chance it's minor, I can pick it up fairly cheap.

You need to scan it with a scan tool to see what code tripped the light. Could be major or minor.

Glad you replied,  I figured you say that.  Now I gotta go look at it.  If it's minor, Home Run !  My luck doesn't run that way though.

If you drive it and it takes off fine,goes 1 to 2 then when it is time for 2 to 3 it goes to neutral and sticks into second gear. Then the front planetary splines are stripped. VERY common. Turn the key off and it should shift 1 to 2 fine again and so on ...............

Here's what the guy said:  "the only thing wrong with car is it has no overdrive and the check engine light is on due to this."  I emailed him to see if he knows the code or if I can scan it and get the code.

We'll see.........
