340 Vibration
« on: July 09, 2010 - 02:09:30 PM »
A question for all you 340 guys - and whoever else.  I have a vibration at 2300 - about 2800 RPM.  Stock 340 but roller cam.  The rotating assy has been balanced by a reputable guy - balances race engines to near perfect.  We balanced the crank etc. seperate from the fly wheel separate from the dampener so parts could be replaced later if needed.  Could this be a natural harmonic that all 340 have?  If not, how can I identify where the problem is?  It's not a nasty vibration but it's there.  I can feel it in the seat and also in the shift handle (manual trans)  Any ideas????  :pullinghair:

Does it come in and then go away? Is it doing it in gear while driving and also in park/neutral? Are tehre any mechanical noises that accompany it?

It does feel like it varies. It does it in neutral.  No noises - the engine runs great.  Could it be the fluid fan?  I did notice that the fan shaft is not perfectly concentric.

I had a viscos fan a few years back balanced and was suprised how much out of balance it was.
Did you have the flywheel balanced with the clutch pressure plate attached?
If all items were balanced seperately it could be small amount from each adding up to a balance problem when combined.   :2cents:

Having the flywheel and dampener on during balancing is best, this eliminates any problems with the two end items being out of balance themselves, also yes the viscous fan could be an issue too. Then again, it could be something different altogether like a worn universal joint? usually its the rear one on the tail shaft that goes first. Easiest way to check them is have the car in neutral with chocks under the wheels(engine off!) and get under the car and turn that tail shaft hard by hand, if you see any movement in the ends replace the uni.

Looks like it could be the fan!  Took it off last night and the engine is much smoother.  :) Didn't know you could balance the fan.  How does that work and can any balance shop do it??

It's probably not a balance issue. Lay it flat on a table and see if any blades are bent. If you have one out of whack, that would make the whole thing wobble.

Hey Mike
I checked that and the fan runs true. Also U joints are new and the driveline is in good shape.  Without the fan, it runs smoother for sure.  I'll try a different fan.
Thanks

Found the problem!!  The fan clutch had a .750 bore for the water pump shaft but the pump shaft is .625!  Temporarily wraped the pump shaft to .750, re-installed the fan and much smoother!  :jumping:  What type of fan clutch do I need for a 71 Cuda 340 with manual trans?  Thermal or non-thermal?????

Hey Bullitt - the NAPA fan has a .750 hole but my water pump has a .625 shaft.  Same problem I started with.  Any ideas?
