See if it runs prior to restoration?

I plan on rebuilding the carb anyway, so I was thinking I would see if it runs (it did before 10 years of barn storage) before pulling it.  I will change the oil and plugs.  While the plugs are out, I was thinking of somehow to "mist" oil into the cylinders before putting the new plugs in.  I will also pull the valve covers to get some oil on the rockers, pushrods, springs, etc..  Can anybody tell me how they would oil the cylinder walls before trying to turn the motor by hand to make sure everything is free?  Is this pointless to do?  for instance, I would rather not rebuild the rear if it works.

Mine sat for 17-years not running but in dry storage... I removed the plugs & squirted Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders, let that soak a few days then stared turning by hand. Then after dropping & cleaning out the oil pan (was a gruesome mess that came out the drain), put fresh oil & filter on & primed with oil pump priming tool on a drill.  With the plugs still out cranked the motor to blow out the excess MMO.

beyond that, I would pour some oil over the valve train and lifters and then prime the engine

I don't know why I didn't think of priming it also :bricks1:  Now to find a priming tool.  I assume it is not the same as a Chevy.  This is my first Mopar project.

So, would it be a waste of time to see if it runs when I am going to pull it anyway?  Just curious I guess.

I get the idea from the 1st post that you are planning on using the motor again as it is, if this is the case making sure it's good now would make sense then at least if it's not you won't waist time putting it back as it is.

Yeah, it's my brothers car.  He has had the car forever (I took it to my prom in 1984) and it has been in a barn for 10 years.  He had a massive stroke last year and is actually working again (He wasn't supposed to walk again).  I would like to do the best job I can to give the car back to him on his birthday next year.  While he is a Division 1 Tech Inspector for NHRA, all he wants to do is take the car to the drive ins once in a while and enjoy it.  In the end, it won't be a concours car, but it will be a nice driver.  I appreciate the patience of all on this board with this being my first Mopar experience.
