is this ok ?
« on: July 11, 2010 - 11:36:11 PM »
Been working on the body for the past 1.5 years and now getting around to the business end. Today I started tearing down the 440 for inspection and noticed around one of the engine mount tabs something didn't look right.

I took a die grinder and started removing what looked like epoxy, then around the tab and it looks like it was brazed to the block,
Is this a normal or proper way to fix this?

Bottom picture is looking down from deck, the break did not go thru into the water jacket.
Opinions needed  :clueless:

Not normal for the tabs to break off, but not unheard of.  The brazing job looks decent, Unfortunately I don't know if there is a good way to test other than tap it with a hammer to make sure it sounds solid. :2cents:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Good 2nd hand 440 blocks should be available for little $$$ so now would be the time to replace it so you get no regrets later on if that tab broke off again. Brass welding is one good way to repair cast iron though, but there is strength loss in that repair.

I agree with find another block, and agree with: because brazing won't be as strong as original cast iron.  I assume the engine you are building will put out torque equal to or greater than OEM, so you need a good foundation...a good block.

it should ahve been welded with high nickle rod , but it is on the push sid enot the pull side & tyhe other 2 ears would hold .
I would look for another block first though
