How to make Wipers smooooth?
« on: July 12, 2010 - 05:48:20 PM »
Well, after getting caught in a hellacious rain/hail/wind storm.  I need to know how to make the wipers smoothly glide across the window.  The mechanisms seem ok, a little clunky but the wipers seem grabby on the glass.  It gets old after 40 minutes.LOL

Anyone have any ideas?

Even with wiper blades that are only a year old, and a fresh coat of Rain-X on my windshield, mine did the same thing.    :1zhelp:

No rain x but the blades are a few years old.  the don't have too much use on them but do have some time with rain.  Frustrating to listen to all that racket.

Tom

I can feel it in the brake and gas pedal!

I use the original style squeeze bottle of Rain-X & a piece of paper towel to apply, when I finish the glass I wipe off the blades with the damp paper towel...All kinds of black comes off at first but the old blades run smooth till they fall apart.

I use brand new blades and rain-x. Just like a new car now. Soap cleaning of the blades every few weeks help too as you get the grit off.

Sounds like I need some Rain-x, it's raining pretty good now and I got a long drive coming up.

I agree with Rain-X on the windshield and thoroughly cleaning the rubber blades.  You will turn your cleaning rag black from the junk that's on the blades.  A soapy rag does the trick.  Replacing the blades every 6 months helps too.  They don't last as long as they used to.

The Blades on our '98 GT lasted 10+ years using the method I described above, now it was kept in the garage & only had 24K or so on it then but I doubt these hobby cars will see as much use/abuse.

Using some rubbing alcohol on the blades will work wonders. Cuts the road film off easily.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Well, the Adam's detail spray worked good enough for the ride home.  says it's good on glass so i gave it a shot on the side of 83N.  Worked pretty good, the wipers rode smooth for a good while, it rained quite a bit on the way home too but went ok.

Thanks guys,  I figured it was the mechanism.

Tom

Although, is the wiper supposed to cross the cowl trim on every pass?  Mine does, I wonder if there is something up with the motor?

You need the new style blades that will still fit on our arms.  Not all brands fit.  I forget the brand that I purchased but they glide across the windshield as smooth as silk.  I used to hate running the wipers but not no more.

The style looks like this:

Thanks I'll have to check out a set, I like the stainless ones on the car now but they are useless in actual rain.LOL

I found new Trico Exact-Fit blades Cat# 16-2 that are listed for Challenger/Cudas 70-74. Those plastic pieces bind up on the underside of the hood. These Tricos are made of steel and look exactly like the originals
