Eric's 99 Dakota has a 318 4WD auto and noticed on the trip to and from Carlisle that it would only go into overdrive when first getting on the turnpike. Once in overdrive and then if it downshifted, it would not go back into overdrive. The check engine light is not coming on.

First thing would be to determine if the computer is electrically commanding the trans to come out of overdrive or if there is a mechanical /solenoid issue in the transmission itself. Trans connector Pin 6 (brown wire) is the one for the overdrive solenoid. The computer will ground the brown wire to energize the OD solenoid. Should be pretty straightforward to check this with a DVOM.
