Jeep/transmission techs - trans starting to slip?
« on: July 18, 2010 - 03:20:54 PM »
A co-worker has an `03 Liberty,3.7 and recently the trans is starting to slip a bit.I drove it and it is fine when you take off slow but try and punch it and is slips/shudders a bit. Also if you don`t come to a complete stop it takes a second to go into gear.Any chance it doesn`t need a coplete rebiuld?I had it scanned and no codes but it said it`s running hot and fluid smells a touch burnt. Is there any other diagnosis the dealer or trans shop can do before going for a rebiuld?

Get the fluid changed first, then go from there.

Funky smelling fluid isn't a good sign.  Trust me.    :pullinghair:

She said the fluid was changed last year by a shop and I`m wondering if they used the correct type?I`ll probably change the fluid and filter to see if it helps but ya Mike-burnt fluid is never good!

You need to check the CVI (clutch volume index) readings with a scan tool. That will tell what the condition of the clutch packs is.

A local mechanic put his Snap On scanner on it and came up with no codes. Will the Snap On one work or should I have dealer or trans shop do it?

Yes,the Snap On scanner will work. You need to find out not just codes, but CVI numbers.

What is the mileage?

What does the pan look like?

I've had similar experiences with several Chrysler products that turned out to be the wrong fluid although burnt smell was not part of the symptoms... Two times adding a friction modifier solved the problem, on the other the fluid was changed to Mopar Spec fluid.

Have them get CVI numbers and post them.
