NC AUSSIE 1970 RT CHALLENGER
« on: July 19, 2010 - 09:17:18 AM »
G'day all,
Well I finally bit the bullet and bought an original 1970 RT Challenger locally, Quapman(Steve) was kind enough to not only offer this car to me but also throw in as many bits as he could spare to help me along the way. And Steve, I am very grateful too thanks. Now as for the car, she (Gretchen) is a 1970 RT 383 4spd car originally blue with no air conditioning, beyond that we cant say much as the fender tag is missing and so we can only guess to the rest. This isn't such a bad thing for me as I intend on doing a "Vanishing Point" car anyway, I saw that movie when it first came out at the tender age of 6 and challengers have been my thing ever since. This is my fifth challenger so I am quite familiar with them and am not daunted at all by the prospect of restoring this car personally. It also helps when you used to work in a Bus and Coach refurbishment workshop and doing bodywork, rust paint and upholstery by the square yard makes you look at something this size and think, not much is there?  :poopoke:
Anyway have a look below at the pics of the car as picked up and parts, yes I have a fair ways to go, mechanically its not too bad since I already have a few 440 motors and a number of 4 speed and auto transmissions, I should be able to do something with that right?

Good luck with Gretchen! And the watch kitty is a very coveted option, similar to the trunk monkey.  :smilielol:

Good to see you made it home safely, Gary (and Carol).

I'm just happy that Gretchen has found a good home where she'll be taken care of and brought back to life!
My name is Steve and I'm addicted to Challengers...

Hmmm, I'm told that trunk monkey means something here....well i'm sure it will become clear in time. And yep I think im sane enough now to write a bit more about my adventure to quaptown ;) Now you must understand, this aint no picnic in NC where humidity is 90 plus and one does not have airconditioning in their truck, yeah yeah I know, taking on major projects and such and I cant recharge the aircon. Anyway we arrived at Steve's place after a 2 and a half hour drive bright eyed and bushy tailed. Unfortunately i didnt last long, after the challenger was loaded i was feeling it and started going reeeal slow. Steve is a patient man though and managed to throw me over his shoulder and carry me through the rest of it. So having picked over a bunch of parts to throw in the back of the pickup, it was time to say our goodbyes and take off back home, time there? five hours, yup, man challenger men playing with car parts. I think ill see about getting a hotel room near steves place sometime so I can really give him a hard time :P Ok so now we hit the road, arrr, axle hop at 50mph, grrrr, its a 45mph drive all the way home. 160 miles, oh yeah excitement plus. so finally home, everything put away in the shed and finally able to collapse, its 7pm, thats a long thirteen hr day, yup cant remember when was the last time i did that, but hey im sure it wont be the last.  :pullinghair: And Steve, once again, thanks for all you have done, I greatly appreciate it! :2thumbs:
P.S. Since I dont drink beer, what else is on offer?

A great story to pull back out when your Challenger is as far along as Steve's car is!  :clapping:

Ok got a tech question for anyone out there who may be able to help, I have a set of C-body rear brake drums backing plates etc from a 1972 car so they are 11in by 2.5in wide, is this too much for my challenger? Any thoughts? :aussie:

I have 11 X 3" all the way around........Of course they were on the car.  I think the 2.5" for the rear would be ok if they bolt up.  You will need 3" on the front.  They catch all the weight.....................Keep us informed.... :2thumbs:
