Hot steering column

After a hour long drive yesterday, 90 degree temps, I felt the key area of my steering column and it was HOT all the way around.

Felt on down to thefloor and still very hot.

Felt the steering shaft itself under the hood and it was very hot....so I assume what is happening is that the heat is traveling up the shaft and heating everything?

Is this common?  I have Dougs headers....they arent THAT close to the steering shaft....in the vicinity though.

No wonder its so damn hot in the car.....LOL

I'm guessing your right on as to the source, these cars have more metal in them which transfers heat better than the plastic in today's cars.  Can't say I've ever noticed the column heat but I never ran headers in the past.....
  Just something to think about, the exhaust will be extra hot if your running lean or the timing is to advanced.  Otherwise contemplate a heat shield but yea with no A/C, black interior they are hot boxes.

Yeah,They can get hot. I ended up with a whole roll of this foil/bubble wrap insulation from a job.Not sure what it's called. Used it under the carpet and saw a big decrease in temp. I'd even consider two layers. Use the foil tape. Right up behind the rear seat. Up under the dash.The stuff is real cheap at HomeDepot er somewhere like that.It looks just like the expensive stuff.But you tape it down. Lemme' get some pics... R/T

Headers that are close to the steering shaft will heat up the column, but as a norm, the exhaust manifolds dont really have that problem.  Or as bad a problem. Also remember that your brake portioning valve isnt that far away either.  If you are using headers, then consider a shield

I have the Dougs headers, but never noticed any heat from the column. Do you have a ignition key light?  Maybe it's stuck on?  Little green light in the column by the lock cylinder?  Just a thought.  Though it wont heat the whole column...LOL

I have the shield on the master too.

I'm liking that shield...where did ya get it?

I dont have the light hooked up in my coumn......first I thought "oh hell, an electrical problem"...but it was the same temp all up and down the column, to the floor....then felt the shft under the hood, and it was a little warmer even.

Makes sense I guess.

So what kinds of shields are available?

I got it from Mancinis I think, there are polished and unpolished, maybe 15 bucks IIRC?

My column is very hot as well.  Has been since I noticed it a few years ago.  Figured it was heat coming in from the headers on the shaft since the entire passenger compartment is fatmated.  My column also has a 1" hole on the side of it.  When on the road driving you can feel the hot air coming in from the outside.

I have manual disks too, and was wondering if the heat could be cauisng a slight pull right I am having.  had the same damn pull with the drum brakes......oddly.  New brakes hoses, new calipers, rotors, rear cylinders, aluminum master cylinder......the only thing left would be either something in the suspension bent (front suspension all gonethru over this past winter...new bushings, tierod ends, BJ,s, t-bars, strut bars....
